    3. http://genbooks.hypermart.net/search/distribution.html I'm not sure of the accuracy of this tool... but it is definitely interesting. Put in your Surname and the year. It brings up a color shaded map to show you the distribution. It just might give you a hint where you need to look.

I just visited the site and checked for distribution on my surname for 1850 and 1920. Based on other sources of information - I rather doubt the return provided here. None the less - might be worth while to occasionally visit the site to see how this progresses.
