Looking for info on John McCULLOUGH born June 17 1755 in Lancaster county PA,(later to become York). He was in the Rev War enlisting in July of 1776 in Chanceford twp of York county in the company of Captain Ross. He later re enlisted at Mecklenburg county NC in April of 1777 in the Company of Captain Osborn. He later migrated to Carrabas county NC for 11 years, then to Cocke County TN, and to Pulaski County KY at which he lived 30 years. He finally settled in Owen county IN and applied for his pension in the August 1834 term of Probate court of Owen county. He died sometime between 1840-1850 in Owen county IN. I am searching for any info regarding his parents, or a name for his wife as he had 8 children and though his pension records are very detailed as to migration he names no wife. The children are: Robert b. unknown Elizabeth b.1791 m David Evans Sarah b. unknown m Robert Hasty Jonathan b. 12-15-1790 m Elizabeth Staton Mary b. unknown m Enoch Evans William b. unknown Margaret b.unknown m James Modrell Rebecca b. unknown m William Camp All the children were married in Pulaski county KY. The last three children were born in TN and the rest were born in NC. I a guessing that his wife most likely died in Pulaski county KY I have it in his pension papers that his father was also named John. Would be interested in trading info with anyone who is following this line. Hello Fellow Listmembers I am searching for any information regarding an Anna E. Workman who lived in and around the Rowan County NC area about 1795. She married Ephraim Goss on March 23,1795 in Rowan county NC. They migrated to Washington county IN about 1810 and then on to Owen county IN in 1818. Anna died there on Sept 19, 1854. This couple had 10 children and I would be interested in sharing any data. I am trying however to locate who her parents were or at least eliminate any Workman/Wortman in the 1790 Rowan county NC census. ===== Debra Jennings debbiej_2001@yahoo.com "Following the footprints through time" __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Laura, Thanks for checking the Directory of Indiana Physicians for Dr. John W. MAHORNEY. Your info added a town I didn't know he lived in--Eminence. Since I'm in Florida, can anyone tell me anything about Eminence? Is there a library there, or a genealogy society? Thanks, Priscilla Normandy Greenwood
Laura, I noticed the following email and wondered about this Directory. What dates does it include? I have an ancestor who served in the Civil War. Would you be so kind as to check in the Directory for Zadock Dougherty? Thank you Suzanne > > Laura, > Thanks for checking the Directory of Indiana Physicians for D
Posted this message to INMONROE for obvious reasons. I am posting it to the Owen list because the information sought in the last couple of paragraphs may be known by someone on this list. Looking for information and advice on the Henry STINES, JR family of Monroe Co. Henry married Nancy COOTER in May of 1834. They had 10 children. 1. William Ervan, b. 1835, m Elizabeth DAGLEY in 1863 2. Elizabeth Katherine b. 1836, never married, d. 1857 3. Eusibius "Billie" b. 1837, m Mary SOUTH in 1866 (not the founder of Stinesville) 4. Alexander b. about 1839 5. John b. about 1841 6. James 7. Eliza b. about 1845 8. Lawrence, b. about 1846, m. Milly COLLIER in 1879 9. Cyphus, b. about 1838 10. Jane, b. about 1843 Henry died in 1848 and Nancy is listed as head of household in 1850. In 1851, Nancy remarried to Valentine MAJOR. They removed to IL for a while and had one known son, Michael, b. in 1853. In 1860, Valentine and Nancy are back in Monroe Co. Listed with them in the census is Alexander Stine. Valentine died in 1863. In the Monroe Co 1870 census, Nancy MAJOR is again listed as head of household with her son Michael and Lawrence STINE. In 1880 Monroe Co census, Lawrence has married and included in the household is his mother Nancy STINE. The ages throughout the census match up quite well, so I am convinced that Nancy had married V. MAJOR, even though her name is given as STINE in the 1880 census. I am trying to connect to the John STINE of that family. The John STINE to whom I am related spent most of his life in Greene Co. However, a land sale in the late 1860s in Greene Co, lists the buyer as "John STINE of Monroe Co". In 1865, John married Sarah HYSLIP in Washington Co. The only information there is a record of two witnesses who state that John and Sarah are both of Washington Co and over the age of 21. I find no record of John nor Sarah in Washington Co with the exception of the marriage information. Sarah was born and raised in the adjacent county - Martin. Since it is highly likely that John and Sarah had a son 14 months before they were married, I find it likely that they went to the largest town in an adjacent county (Salem) and were married. I have lots of circumstantial evidence that my John was the son of Henry and Nancy, but am looking for ways to "prove it". There are no land records in Monroe for John. Since Nancy carried on as a head of household after Henry's death, there would be no guardianship papers involved. Anyway, neither of those would prove that he was the John that moved on to Greene Co. John's death record has both of his parents as "unknown". I am at a loss as to what other records could identify him. John died in circumstances that would have led the family not to post much information about his death in the local media. One possibility is his listing as a survivor in the obituary of parent or siblings. Therefore, I am looking for family information about those people in the small chance that the obituary will list him. I have no dates of death for anyone except Nancy COOTER STINE MAJOR. I don't know if it is more likely that the obituaries would be in a Bloomington paper or in, say, Gosport in Owen Co which would be closer to Stinesville. Any and all information on the members of this family would be greatly appreciated. Bill
I'm searching for any information about Thomas BALDWIN b. ca1770 MD {probably Anne Arundel Co.} m. Christian WEBSTER b. ?.......they were married 23 Jul 1790 in Prince Georges Co.MD. Thomas BALDWIN's family lived in Anne Arundel Co.MD {James BALDWIN b. ca1750 A.A.Co.MD & Sarah RAWLINGS b. ca1749 A.A.Co.MD.}...... So far I have no family information on Christian WEBSTER. I have a gap between 1790-1810 census on this line.....I know that Thomas BALDWIN was living in Nelson Co.KY and was on the census there 1810-1820.....at this point there is some question as to whether Christian might have died and Thomas remarried possibly to a Margaret Sparr? Thomas's children migrated to Owen Co.IN, but records would show that Thomas most likely did not make that move, and I can find no proof of his death either in Nelson Co.KY. or Owen Co.IN. There is some speculation that his wife was still alive at this time and could have been living with their son {James} as found on the 1830 Owen Co.IN census, but I have found no proof of her death either, but an older female was not listed living with any of the children after that 1830 census. Any information on this line would be very welcome, will share what information I have on any of the people mentioned above. Thanks so much, N.J.Skinner White in MI.
Need parentage of above lady, Matilda NUTTERFIELD, who married James Baldon, early Owen Co., In., J,P.... While reviewing messages for deletion I usually run familiar and not so familiar names through my Family Tree program. Sometimes I hit paydirt, sometimes not. Usually the best I can hope for is a little bit of info to store for later research. The Wood name shows up only in one branch but I'll save such data anyway. My great grandaunt Sarah Bigger (Ritter) Arthur's eldest daughter Lulu Ritter married a William Wood about 1898. She was born in 81, I have no information on William. Also ver little on Lulu. You may know this already, but while I visited the Putnam County courthouse for the first time today, I noticed a directory of Indiana Physician's licenses so I figured I would look for your name. I don't think it answers your question, but perhaps there is something here that will be new. It didn't say a lot, but said on page 33 that Dr. John W. Mahorney earned his diploma March 3, 1883 from the Indiana Medical College, that he practiced 18 months at Little Point, Morgan County first and since there at Eminence, same county & expects to remove to Belle Union, Putnam county in a short time. This entry was dated Aug. 19, 1886. The book covered many many years, because I looked up two other names that had possible connections to my family lines, and one listed a doctor who graduated in 1952 (not 1852!) Posted on: Owen Co. In Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/OwenObits/46 Surname: MURPHY, DOUGLAS, STONE ------------------------- Catherine Stone Murphy Obituary Catherine Stone Murphy, daughter of John and Catherine Stone, was born in Morgan county, Indiana, near what is now known as Alaska on June 1, 1843, and on January 6, 1935, about noon, while the clouds were broken and the sun was peeping through and the day developing into a beautiful evening and the earth illuminated and lighter with its radiant rays of light, death stole in and claimed for its victim our beloved mother, she beng 91 years, 7 months and 5 days of age. Jesus said: "Watch, for ye know not the hour when the Lord cometh". Her life seems to us a short journey, and when human hands had ministered all in their power, the inevitable came, as it must come to all of us, and Aunt Kate, as she was called, answered the call. When quite young she gave her heart to God and united with the Church of Christ at the old log church situated one-half mile north of Alaska, Indiana, having the emblem of baptism administered by emersion, after transferring her membership to the Higgins Creek church, and remaining a faithful member until her death. In the year 1860, at the age of 17 years, her marriage to John Murphy was solemnized by Squire Thomas Potorff, and to this union was born seven children, three of whom have preceded her in death, namely: Alexander, commonly known as "Doc", Samuel and Delia. Lafayette Murphy of Coldwater, Mich., John Murphy of Gosport, Mrs. John Allee of Quincy, Mrs. Annie Freeman are among those surviving. The father of this union died in the year 1904, after which Mrs. Murphy earned her own living until overtaken with loss of eyesight, when she was compelled to give up and make her home with her children. Aunt Kate, as she was better known, was a well respected citizen in all communities in which she lived. She was a kind, true, loving, devoted wife and mother, always trying to make those with whom she came in contact happy. To know her was to love her. A few hours before the Great Reaper thrust his sickle into the sheaf for the great storehouse, she was heard to say in the presence of a granchild: " I see your face." Her voice is stilled, a vacant place appears and she leaves four children, three grandchildren, twenty seven great-grandchildren, one nephew and a host of other relatives and friends. Let us console ourselves that our loss is her eternal gain. Mother dear has left us, her face we'll see no more. We know that she is no wresting on that great eternal shore. We always loved and trusted her, her guidance always right. We're striving now to meet her in that land so fair and bright. Farewell, farewell, dear Mother, we miss you oh so much. Those loving words, that tender smile and the hands we loved to touch. But now you've gone to Heaven, with God and the Angels fair. And we know if we but trust Him some day we'll meet you there. --Mr. & Mrs. John Murphy Primary cause of death: Myocarditis (info from Owen County Health Dept) ----------------------------- Catharine Stone married John Murphy, the son of Thomas & Elizabeth Douglas Murphy of Owen Co, IN.
