    1. [INOWEN] JONES FAMILY
    2. Debbie Jennings
    3. I am researching the JONES surname in Owen county as it pertains to the lineage of JESSE JONES (born 10-6-1824 died 1-9-1888) who married Sarah YOUNG (b.4-27-1825 d. 11-8-1912). Jesse and Sarah were married 4-25-1839 in I believe Union county IN. They were the parents of 10 children. These children tie into various Owen county surnames. 1. Elijah born 1840 married Christina SHOPPELL. 2. William born 1841 married Mary KELLY 3. James born 1846 (no info) 4. Thomas born 1847 (mentioned in detail below) 5. Sampson born about 1850 married Minerva McCLURE 6. John born 1853 married Minnie BEAMAN 7. Emily born 1855 married Enos DAY 8. Anderson born 1857 (mentioned in detail below) 9. Harrison born 1867 (no info) 10. Daniel born unknown and no info I descend from 2 of these. 1) son-Thomas Jefferson born 7-26-1847 died 6-30-1907. He married Harriet Elizabeth SWEENEY (b.11-19-1855 d. 12-12-1918).She was the daughter of John G & Rutha (BRADSHAW) SWEENEY. Thomas and Harriet were the parents of 13 children. I descend in one way or another through 3 of them. 2) son-Anderson born 3-13-1857 died 7-17-1927.He married Frances Catherine Knipe (daughter of John W & Eva (JOB) KNIPE.) Frances is the niece of Susannah Knipe who married John KNOLL (of course another line of mine). I realize this is a lengthy post. But I also realize there were 3 Jesse Jones in Owen county about the same time frame and they all married a Sarah. I am hoping by providing the details above I might zero in on my Jesse and Sarah. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Ethel11390@cs.com> To: <INOWEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 10, 2000 12:36 AM Subject: Re: [INOWEN] Owens Co.In. biographies Donna, is this the biography that you wanted? Owens Co.In. History, 1884 HENRY BAUGH, City Marshal, is a native of Putnam County, In., born Feb. 12, 1839. His parents, CHRISTOPHER and HANNAH (LANGUELL) BAUGH, immigrated to Indiana from Kentucky, and located in Putman Co., and afterward, moved to Monroe Co., where the father still resides. The mother died in 1877. Henry baugh is the fifth of a family of seven children, and was reared in Monroe Co. on a farm. When he was twenty-tree years old, he enlisted in Co. B. sixty-seventh Iniana Volunteers, under Capt. Denny. He was discharged late in the same year, on account of inability to serve, and returned to Monroe County, where he went to farming. In 1871, he sold his farm and removed to Spencer,Owne County; farmed near the town, but was teamster during part of this time. In May, 1882, he ws elected City Marshal, and his first term of service giving stisfaction, he was re-elected in 1883, and at present creditably fills the office. He was married, when nineteen years of age, to LETHA BOLES, daughter of HAWKINS AND TAROBY BOLES, old and respected pioneers of Monroe Co. By this union there are eight children. Mr. Baugh is a member of K. of P., Lodge No 99, and is also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Politically, he is a Republican. If this is not the right one, just let me know, Jackie > Hello Jackie, > May I get the biography from you? My family names are on your list. 3. Thanks, Suzanne Brayer, for the explanation of the "tavern" of its time. I am hoping someone who knows Owen County history will know something about this Ohio House, or have read about it. I really would love to know if it can be tied to the Criss family. As I said before, I was dubious about some of the info in the document - for example, it starts out by saying that William Criss and Nancy France were born in Sweinburg, Germany, and married there, then emigrated to America. But in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, they say they were born in Virginia and Pennsylvania respectively. So, I would love some proof that the Ohio House had something to do with them, or even that someone remembers it, or remembers their grandparents talking about it. Laura E. Even Quakers (my Huddlestons in Union Co) ran Inns. If a large house was on a well traveled road it would make sense that people would need to rest, eat, and board their horse for the night. Usually, the family quarters were upstairs and the guests stayed downstairs. This is not a tavern like we think of today. The tavern would be the modern "bed and breakfast" :>) Suzanne
