    1. [INOWEN] Couchman Steele Walker Westfall... and many others
    2. T. Thompson
    3. This may give several of you some hints... Terresa The following was written by Alice Milligan, a daughter of Rev. Thomas Milligan. This is an account of the Bethany Presbyterian church located in Owen County - Montgomery Township >From "Fact and Folklore of Owen County Vo. II" written by Dixie Kline "Just before our father became home missionary to Owen County in 1853, two large colonies had removed from Bethany, one to Iowa, the other to Texas and the church never afterward regained its original size. With this migration there slipped away from the Bethany roll most of the Couchmans, Taylors, Ivanses, Lees, Lindseys, and Snoddys. There were left most of the Steeles of Tennessee, the Steeles of Kentucky, the Walkers, Hills, Willoughbys and Westfalls. Of the Tennessee group the king-bolt was Sloan Steele, father of six sons and three daughters who lived to grow up. He died so long ago that he leaves only the dimmest picture of a pleasant-faced, gray-haired old man who entertained three little children at his knee by teaching them: "Shoe the horse and shoe the mare/But let the little colt go bare," meanwhile beating the rhythm on the sole of the baby's bare foot. His widow Margaret Nail Steele held her family toghether with strength and dignity. Her sister Elizabeth Walker, also a woman of fine brain and character, had come with the Steeles from the Knoxville region... all Presbyterians, dyed in the wool... Mrs. Walker's husband George, a born wag, while a faithful attendant at all services, never made a profession of his faith. The Steeles of Kentucky were a remarkable family. The father Ninian Steele entered the land and built the large double log house in which Bethany was organized. This fine old house sheltered a large family. Those whose names I recall are Ninian Jr., Samuel, James, Jesse, Howe, and Nancy. (Miss Milligan went on to tell that Ninian Jr. and his wife Johana Westfall moved to Bambridge. Samuel, grandfather of the late Levi Steele, lived and died on a farm near Gosport.) James moved to Montgomery County. Jesse was one of the Iowa band, a man whom we knew through his widow, "Aunt Jane" of blessed memory. She and Jesse had married when she was 15. She died in Iowa past 90 years of age. Another saintly character, Miss Milligan wrote, was Nancy Westfall whose husband Issaac was reared in the region of Vincennes and was once a member of the Indiana legislature. They were the parents of James Westfall, a member of the church, and at least one other child, William. Nancy Westfall was "lame in one hand and foot" from a fall as an infant. She died in 1860 at 59. Her brother was Howe Steele. The Willoughbys were a family most devoted to the church. 'The pioneer father, I can just remember, as an aged, whitefaced man, whom his children called 'daddy' a term then little used. His faithful daughters, Ann and Polly, and their motherless niece Hannah whom they reared, were constant attendants at church, always coming on horseback with Hannah riding behind." Rev. Mr. hill none of us ever saw, but we knew the story of the Maine sailor of reckless life wonderfully converted like Saul of Tarsus... His plain, outspoken speech was a constant source of anxiety to his gentle wife, Clarissa Huey Hill of North Carolina. On horseback they took their wedding journey from North Carolina to Indiana, she on an Indian pony... Mrs. Hill, the mother of James Hill, a lieutenant in the Civil War, lived long in the Bethany community. Thomas Robertson, Miss Milligan describes, was almost a giant in size and strength, and a famous feller of trees summoned for all the Wood-choppings and log-rollings far and near. His iron will made him a born fighter and woe awaited the young man who attempted to court any of his five daughters. He and a group of his daughters mounted on gray horses were a familiar part of the company that gathered in the hitching grove of o1d Bethany. One of the finest of the girls married John S. Johnson, late an elder in the Spencer church... Many of the Bethany fathers and mothers were laid to rest in the Surber graveyard. On March 20, 1820, Rev. Isaac Reed met with several people at Ninian Steele's home and organized the church with charter members Mr. Steele, Jane Steele, John Mitchell, Mary Ann Mitchell, John Hudson, John Martin and William Hudson. For several years the Steele home was the meeting place except for outdoor services when weather permitted. The first "house of worship" was erected on land that was later owned by Thomas Surber, In a few years it was moved two miles west and rebuilt on land donated by Ninian Steele. In 1873 the congregation built a "neat frame building" on the land of James M. Hill and that's where it stands in 1982, and where there are still decendants of old families actively involved. Among their activities was the recent publication of a more complete history of Bethany.

    3. Where would I look for the following death certificate? Nancy E (Griffith) Beatty was hit by a car in Patricksburg (Owen), taken to the hospital in Terre Haute (Vigo), but she lived in Clay County. So do I order the death certificate from Vigo, Clay, or Owen? I think she may have been still barely alive when arriving in the hospital in Vigo County. Even if DOA, wouldn't the death been certified at the hospital in Vigo County? I just don't want to send my money to the wrong place. Thanks

    1. [INOWEN] COMPLETE OLD SETTLERS LISTING & ARTICLE
    2. Old Setters List, 8 August 1879 Spencer, Owen County, Indiana (As printed in the "Owen County Journal" newspaper, 4 Sep. 1879. Listed are the old settlers' names, place and date of birth and the year of removal to Indiana. Individuals with just IN and a year were born in Indiana in that year.) Thursday, Aug. 28, 1879, the day appointed for the meeting of old settlers at Spencer, was propitious in all respected, and the good people, old and young, to the number of several thousand, responded to the call and came out to enjoy the proceedings appointed for that day. The arrangements previously made were ample for the comfort of the crowd and the programme of exercises gave general satisfaction. The speaking was above the average on similar occasions, and the music by the Chapel and Spencer Bands was good enough for any sort of gathering. The crowd assembled about the stand in the court house yard about 9 o'clock A.M. and the exercises were opened with prayer by J.F. Allison. Then followed short speeches by A. Henry, A.R. Mills, Wm Williams, J.F. Allison, Jesse Vaughan and T. C. Franklin, which took up the time in the forenoon. The speeches ere all interesting and related to early days, the hardships endure, the difficulties encountered and overcome, the danger that were ever present in the forms of wild beasts and wilder men, and also the sunny side of the picture with its primitive pleasures and cordial enjoyments. In the afternoon Gov. J. D. Williams was the first speaker introduced. Being an old settler himself he confirmed many of the tales told of pioneer life by the speakers of the forenoon and gave a number of interesting early incidents within his own experience and observation. The short speech of the governor commanded close attention and it was well fitted to the occasion. J.W. Archer was next introduced and proceeded to read a lengthy and carefully prepared paper on the early history of this country and its first settler. The paper is valuable and contains historical and biographical facts that are invaluable. There is an interesting story that I have included that was taken from a book I have "Fact and Foldlore of Owen County Vol. II" written by Dixie Kline. Here is what I have, excluding some of the later generations. Descendants of John Johnson Generation No. 1 1. John1 Johnson was born in Virginia. He married Unknown in Ky-Nc. She was born in Kentucky. Notes for John Johnson: Think this might be Capt. John Johnson??? bro of Cornelius (Hist of Ow Co)?? Aunt Gladys notes: Killed by Indianas at Cumberland Gap. More About John Johnson and Unknown: Marriage: Ky-Nc Child of John Johnson and Unknown is: 2. i. LEWIS DAVID2 JOHNSON, b. March 04, 1807, Va/NC; d. July 19, 1882, Owen Co, Indiana. Generation No. 2 2. Lewis David2 Johnson (John1) was born March 04, 1807 in Va/NC, and died July 19, 1882 in Owen Co, Indiana. He married (1) Anna Ooley 1829 in Kentucky. He married (2) Elizabeth Wise February 27, 1834 in Owen, Indiana, daughter of Henry Wise and Matilda. She was born April 15, 1815 in Nc, and died January 18, 1888 in Owen Co, Indiana. Notes for Lewis David Johnson: Text taken from "Fact and Folklore of Owen County Vol. II" written by Dixie Kline >From a Cornerstone I hope somewhere on another plane W. H. Johnson is pleased that the record he placed in the Freedom high school cornerstone in 1915 (and later retrieved when the building was razed) is going to be appreciated and read in the future.. . more than he imagined. Inasmuch as a cornerstone is to contain a message for the future, I take it there may be some relative or other persons that would be interested to read what I say of myself. My life has not been eventful only to myself and those closely connected. I was born in a log cabin situated in Sec. 27, NE quarter in the year 1838, January 18 [Franklin township]. At foot of the hill above which a spring came out and ran down near the cabin. My father's name, Lewis Johnson, born in Virginia in 1807, died July, 1882. Mother's name Elizabeth Wise Johnson born in North Carolina in 1813. died 1858. I am second son of my father's second wife [he having two daughters by a former wife]. My brothers and sisters as follows: J. M. Johnson, eldest son, W. H. Johnson (the writer), Mary Johnson Biggs, Elnor Johnson Keller, Angeline Johnson, Perlina Johnson, unmarried, both; Cornelius, Windfield C. and John A. Johnson. I was about two years old when father bought the Se.Se., Section 22, built a hewed log house and moved, and in which he lived to raise all his children, and until it was no longer fit to live in. I being especially attached to mother and desiring to promote her comfort, built a comfortable house for them in which they spent the remainder of their lives. But to go back a little, my other brother married a wife at 18 years of age, and left me to do the work on the farm. I being next oldest, so I continued to stay at home giving my entire time and means to the support of the family until I was 28 years of age. It now seemed that I should leave the cares to the younger brothers and father. So I accordingly began to cast about to find something to do for my life's work. I had no means to speak of although I had taught several terms of school. It had all went to the general supply. But now something must be done; it required quite a sum to begin farming, besides I had no land to farm in this situation, I finally decided to try merchandising and I began to prepare for the financial part. And to get together all the money I could to purchase my first stock. I had rented corn land of Rodney Leach in 1868, and with one horse had made an excellent crop. Corn being scarce, 1 sold enough to bring $680, same fall and winter taught school which brought $215, now had $895. I then burrowed $500 of Alex McBride which constituted the sum total of my capitol. Procured a house in Freedom and April 4, 1869, I started on horseback for Ellettsville. Left my horse in barn and went by rail to New Albany and made my initial purchase which consisted of dry goods, groceries, hardware, notions and Queensware. At that time all goods were very high in price and being without experience, I was an easy mark, although the people I dealt with assured me they would take care of my interest which they did, in a way, for I found on opening the goods for display that I had paid retail prices for most everything. And some things above that. I then determined to use my own judgment and profit by experience, so I got the retail prices as well as I could and sold without regard to cost. My main object was as cheap as anyone. My object was dispose of the high-priced and buy at true cash values. I had the services of traveling men who were anxious to sell me when they found that I paid all bills promptly, thus my credit was worth thousands of dollars to me. And by continuing this way always being strictly honest in my dealing with everyone, my business grew equal to best expectations, And now that I considered that I had had a reasonable degree of success and felt that I could support a better half [though I now think that was a mistake as early marriage is preferred, I say this as advice to any that might be interested]... Having made the acquaintance of Miss Sadie M. Fulk, daughter of Emmanuel Folk, ex-recorder, it being agreeable to all, we were married October 2, 1882. Our first baby came May 15, 1884, Elizabeth.
