    1. [INOWEN] Let's begin the Roll Call
    2. Debbie Jennings
    3. Happy New Year Listmembers: I trust that everyone had a great Christmas season. I would like to welcome all the new subbers to the list recently. I am going to be running the roll call I spoke of a while back. For the new members, a roll call is simply a request for everyone to get their queries on the list for the best possible results. In doing this please remember a few items and guidelines. PLEASE DO NOT JUST HIT REPLY AND SEND THE POSTING TO ME...SEND IT TO THE LIST. Let's begin this roll call right now on Monday January 1st 2001 and run it until next Sunday next night at midnight January 7th 2001. To make your query work harder for you... keep in mind the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following as possible: SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query and make your query command attention, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember ! ! ! ! Many subscribers belong to multiple mailing lists; therefore, many go through their mail looking at subject fields... only reading those that have descriptive subject names. Unfortunately, messages entitled "Question", "Help", "IMPORTANT!", "My Family", "My Line", "My Grandfather", etc., are deleted without ever being opened. WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific questions or bits of information. Post other queries with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one query. In this way, each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790s, late 1800s etc.) WHERE: Mention the location of events (birth, marriage, death, etc.) in the body of the query. Include their migration path if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it and update it as necessary. Use it again bi-weekly to touch base with new members. Also, you may use it on web sites that accepts queries. REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group), such as this, is an excellent forum for helping you get that information. Make your query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. GOOD QUERIES CONNECT... CAUTION... You may wish to consider withholding personal data on living descendants. Because, at the moment, once your message has been archived on RootsWeb, neither the data within nor the message can be removed from the archives. ALWAYS: Be sure to thank the person(s) who answer your queries, whether or not their answers have any usable info or not. Remember, they might not have any info now, but just might obtain some, and be reluctant to send to an ungrateful person. TRY: To answer as many queries as you may be able to. In this I mean ones that you have info for. NOT just to say "I don't know anything". Also make certain that if your answer doesn't apply to more then a couple persons, please send it privately and not to the group. Many of our lists are set to reply to the group, so check the address before sending. 2. Dick, Thanks for the input about KY and the route to IN.....I love all these little tidbits that I keep getting , that I had no idea about....and I agree about the relationships of areas for that time period....I've found it lot. Sorry to say.....most of what I know about the Bowen family is what I already printed....just happened to see the name and started checking my line out to see if it was one of them or not. You gave me more than I had on her so that's great. Sorry I don't know anymore to be able to answer your question. Thanks again, N.J. : ) in MI. -----------original message-------------- << N.J. Considering the times, it is not uncommon for there to be multiple relationships between families. Thomas Ooley's wife was a Crockett. He was born abt. 1793 in Green County, KY; Margaret Emeline Crockett was b. abt. 1796 in Anderson County, TN. They were married in Owen County, IN about 1827 or so. Green Co. is not that far from Rockcastle and Garrard Co.'s considering that during the early 1800's Lexington was the main market center for that region. And also many Kentuckians went on to IN. You have more on Ora Bowen's family than I currently have. My cousin Sharon never did much research on John's other families. However I do have a note on a distant relation James Howe of VA and later Clinton Co., Ohio. His son Micheal Tetherow Howe b. Dec 21, 1814 prob in Clinton Co. married a Ann Bowen. Do not know if there is a connection to your Bowen family. Dick S. >>

    3. Still looking for information on Celia Cain, b. 23 Jan 1797, m. to James H. Barham Newsom, b. 17 Feb 1793. In my records they had 13 children; so I don't think that she died early. However, I cannot find any information on her, and someone I ran into awhile back even had my James H. B. Newsom married to a Sallie Crane. I'm perplexed! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! 2. J Rader
    3. Greetings Listers, My name is James Rader and I am currently researching my mother's maiden name DICKEY. Her father, Arthur DICKEY, was born Feb. 02, 1895 possibly near the town of Patricksburg in Marion Twp., Owen county, Indiana. His DICKEY ancestors first settled in the Marion township area of Owen county with the migration of his great-grandparents, Emanuel and Mary Magdalenah (MISHLER) DICKEY from Tuscarawas county, Ohio about 1851. To date, I have been unsuccessful in finding Arthur's birth record. Arthur's parents are Eli Ervin DICKEY, b. 1874; d. 1930, and Catherine (Cassie) RED or REID, m. Feb 28, 1893. Arthur DICKEY died on May 11, 1973 in Fremont, Ohio. I would welcome any help in locating Arthur's birth record or any other information about his family.

    3. Not much info on Louisa Hartman other than through her marriage to John Storm Beem and their daughter who married Andrew Newsom (below). This info is from "Owen County Indiana ~a history~ 1994. ANDREW JACKSON NEWSOM, PHARMACIST IN OWEN COUNTY 1870s AND 1880s Andrew J. Newsom (1847-1884) died of pneumonia at his home on N. Montgomery St. in Spencer, Indiana at age 37 and is buried in the Beem Circle at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. He married Frances Beem, daughter of John Storm Beem and Louisa Hartman on March 15, 1871. Frances Beem's father John Storm Beem (1826-) was the grandson of Captain Daniel Beem born in 1754. Daniel's father was born on board ship migrating from Germany to Philadelphia. The German name was Boehm. Daniel emigrated from North Carolina to Kentucky in 1790 then emigrated to Jackson County, Indiana near Brownstown. In 1817 he moved to Owen County. He built his log cabin where the Riverside Cemetery is now located in Spencer. He laid claim to that land and later had a surveyor layout the town of Spencer. He had three sons: Neely, Enoch, and Levi and three daughters: Rebecca Elizabeth, and Anna. Neely (1788-1835) had two sons: John Storm and Richard. John's daughter Frances married Andrew Newsom. Andrew Newsom was the son of Henry and Loella (Walls) Newsom natives of North Carolina. Henry and Luella married in 1841 in Greene County, Indiana and located there on a farm. Henry's parents were James Byron and Celia Ann Cane. James Byron's father was Jacob from Southampton County, Virginia, Newsoms, Virginia. Andrew graduated from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana and served as a pharmacist in Worthington, Indiana. He then purchased half interest in his father-in-law's business, the firm was known as "Beem and Newsom" and was located on the southwest corner of the square in Spencer. Andrew had seven children: Otis Tilford, Grace, Winifred, Lola E., Nellie B., Earl, and Mayme. My husband is the grandson of Otis Tilford (1872-1951). Ron's father was Wayne Andrew (1901-1963), one of five sons of Otis T. and Buryle Trolove. The other four brothers were named: Frederick Raymond, Don Huston, Paul Beem (died in infancy), and Otis Elmer. There was a daughter named Mary Louise. The other son of Andrew was Earl Jackson "Peck" (1880-1962). He had only one son named Jack Badger (1908-1977). Jack's widow is presently living in Spencer and was the former Virginia White. Jack and Virginia had one son, Jack Ncwsom who presently is a pharmacist in Cloverdale, Indiana and resides in Spencer. He has two sons Erie Tyner and Paul David and a daughter Melisa Louise. Andrew has only 6 Newsom "sons" surviving him as of 1993. All of his son Otis' boys had daughters with the exception of my husband Ronald Wayne, only son of Wayne. Ronald Wayne (1933) lives in Green Lake, Wisconsin and is the Vice President of Development at the American Baptist Conference Center. He has a son Douglas (1961) and Douglas has a son Kyle (1993). Ron's second cousin Jack, and Jack's two boys Erie and Paul comprise the 6 male Newsom descendants of Andrew. Andrew had four brothers and a sister. Andrew's brothers, Alvis Newton, William J., James H., and Charles R. have many male descendants, but that's another story. 1. Re: [INOWEN] John (ca 1782), Lewis(ca 1807) JOHNSON AND ( Elizabeth WISE)
    2. R.W., You probably already have this info, but just in case..... Excerpts from a book written by David E. Beem, 1917, "The Daniel Beem Family" - ...Besides those already mentioned, the settlers who came early in the year 1817 were John Bartholomew,Thomas McNaught, John Mitchell, John Hudson, Hugh Barnes, Isaiah Cooper, William McDonald, Jacob McIntrye, JAMES BIGGER, Dudley Milner, Richard Kirby and William Anderson. These were all who arrived in time to make a crop in 1817. ...The first marriages were those of JAMES BIGGER and Thomas Allen, who married Daughters of Philip Hart on the same day, having obtained licenses at Vincennes, before Owen County was organized. ...[Occurred after March 1820]....James Galletly, surveyor, proceeded to lay out the town [Spencer, IN], which he did into 272 lots. He was assisted by Samuel Alexander, JAMES BIGGER, Samuel Fain, John Dunn, Thomas Allen, Arthur (son of David) Johnson, Enoch Beem, Andrew Evans, Levi Beem, John R. Freel and George Hambleton. ..... From a listing of Owen County Marriage Records, 1819-1834 BIGGER, Stephen L. - Sally Vaughn 6/7/1827 Hope this helps, Pat

    3. Terresa, Can't help much on her ancestors but do have a little on her decendents. I had FTM cut it off at my great grandfathers generation as there might be a few of the next generation around yet. Like you and many others I'm looking for the key to several ancestors past. Mine main brick wall has Capt. James Bigger in front of it. Now if I can get my eldest brother to make a trip to D.C. I might get lucky or at least get a few more leads.
