If you have access to the 1870 census for Morgan, Owen, or Putnam county, Indiana, I am seeking a lookup for a DUNKIN/DUNCAN family with at least the following. SARAH age 49, son JAMES, age 16, and perhaps daughter SUSAN MARY/MARY SUSAN, age 14. Sarah and James are shown in Putnam Co in 1880, next door to Morris Carter and John Carter families. This could help tear down a roadblock of 30+ years. Thanks very much. Dick Carter [email protected]
Usually for Mary. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Carter" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, May 04, 2002 10:55 AM Subject: [INOWEN] Re: Dumb Question > Ok... Listmembers: A new section has been added to our website containing "Early Land Claims" of Owen county; a selection of land patents filed. I am asking for any contributions in the following categories: 1. Oldest/Youngest Photos: This is a section that shows the earliest born ancestor you have a photo of and the most recent born member of your family. This doesn't need to be of the SAME SURNAME, just both members of your family line. 2. Letters from the Past: Any old letters that you might have copies of 3. Our Featured Family--a submission of a Genealogy Report on one family line that was in one of our covered areas. Listmembers: Although this post isn't of a direct genealogical nature, it is of historical interest perhaps. The PBS stations are running a program that was on last night (Monday) and will continue tonight and Wednesday from 9pm -11pm. It is called the Frontier Experience and is about 3 families selected from about 5000 that applied. These 3 families "go back in time" to 1883, and live as a homesteader in Montana for a 5 month period, just as our ancestors did for a 5 year period to "prove up" on their claim. They are building their own homes and must live only with what would have been available in 1883. As there were different types of homesteaders, these 3 families are different in that one has "found" a homestead with an already built cabin, the second has one that has been started by "previous owners" and the other must build theirs from the woods. It is a most informative and interesting program and while maybe not as authentic in every detail; it gives a glimpse into what our ancestors may have been through. I urge everyone to attempt to view it. In attempting to get the cemetery listings on our website, I am also attempting to get some type of comment on the ones I can concerning the conditions of the cemetery. This I am doing to be a assistance to others who live far away to save them a trip if a cemetery is in an inaccessible shape. If you have visited any of the cemeteries in the Owen/Morgan county areas, please let me have your comments for posting on the site. Please place CEMETERY CONDITIONS in the subject line Even if I don't have a listing for it yet, the conditions are still helpful. Please include: name of the cemetery date/year you were there (approximate if needed) any particulars such as stone conditions (readable, broken); overall maintenance, accessibility, is there any climbing/weeds, is it on private property requiring permission. You name for credit Please don't hesitate to give a bad report as this will only help others in making perhaps an expensive trip that is useless. Thank you for your assistance in helping other researchers.
