McDowell, born October 25, 1831, in Virginia, and died April 20, 1914, in Lafayette, Indiana. By cross reference with surviving relatives in the obituary, I was able to discover that Marion's father was Woodford G. McDowell, Sr., and therefore it seems Marion named one of his own sons after his father. Woodford G. McDowell, Sr., was the son of James and Sarah Gorrell McDowell, and he was born to these parents in what was then Woodford County, Virginia (part of the later Commonwealth of Kentucky). He is buried with two brothers, Hiram and John, and his mother Sarah Gorrell McDowell, in a private family plot here in Montgomery County (Findagrave.com memorial #9586943). Samuel McDowell, born approximately 1806 in Kentucky, is most likely Marion C. McDowell's second cousin through Marion's great uncle, John McDowell. Samuel was probably born in Woodford County also after Kentucky gained statehood. His father John McDowell (James McDowell, Sr.'s brother) moved to Ripley County, Indiana, and appears in the 1820 Federal Census for that state. Samuel McDowell moved here from Ripley County to Franklin Township, Montgomery County, Indiana, prior to the 1850 Federal Census, with his wife's extended family. Samuel McDowell's wife was Francis Stone Stipe, daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann Stipe, and the Stipe Family has several ancestors buried at Shannondale Cemetery, Franklin Township. Hope this helps in some small way for your research. Melissa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
