I see a Francis Hayes listed in the 1870 census - occupation "artist" - maybe a clue. Somewhere I have a book on this subject, but I can't put my hands on it right now, of course! I think your biggest problem will be the woman's clothing, which appear to be homemade and somewhat generic. The woman's sleeves are way too baggy to help identify a period. The shawl doesn't help matters, as it hides bodice details. The man's suit has a rather long jacket, and that is a variable common to some periods of the latter half of the 19th century. Having said that, it looks like this couple would hang onto serviceable clothing and not be in the latest fashions. Sorry to muddy the waters, I am no help!
