Hi Karen, I did get in touch with Carol Breeden and am very excited to work with her on it--the name is a winning match! Yes, there are some discrepancies with the 1840 and 1850 censuses; however, in 1850 I noted that the oldest daughter was about 20, so it is very possible that the son was even older and was already living on his own. That doesn't ensure the 1840s daughters are the same as those listed in 1850, but it is a possible explanation for the missing son. MAYBE the missing son is the Claude Coltrain filing for divorce! I would have no idea how to find that. Do death certificates at this time list parents? I mean, who knows about Claude, but that would be good information to know about death certificates. I will definitely look into the marriage affidavits; that could be a really excellent resource for me. Also, could you send that last link to me again? It has disappeared from my inbox (probably my children are to blame...). It looked like a clue to one of the censuses I found and the mysteries it presented... Thank you so much!! You might check to see what she has ! ===== As per Hester and Esther they are very interchangeable names - actually one in the same in that time frame !! I have a Hesther Helms in my own family that I've found many times listed as Esther (even in the bible but marriage and tombstone say Hesther). Noted they had 4 daughters and a son in the 1840 census. 1850 you have lists just the 4 daughters and not positive those are the same 4. ============ Do you know who this Coltrain is? It's sad :( Claude R. COLTRAIN Crawfordsville Review Sat Jan 15, 1916 Claude R. COLTRAIN of near Darlington filed suit for divorce from Leona Coltrain in the circuit court Friday. His grounds are that she continually found fault with and finally abandoned him May 1912. It is stated in the complaint they were married Dec 20, 1911. McAdams & Jones of Lafayette are attorneys. ============== On 10/14/2013 1:31 AM, Alisha Erin Hillam wrote: > Hello! > > I am researching the Coltrain family.
