Quillen, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Thomas Quillen, states that James' father was a minister for the Newlight Church (also known as the "Reformed" Church) and preached in a number of different Christian churches throughout western Indiana, including a number of years at the Mount Pleasant Christian Church toward the final years of his life. This may indicate that he was a non-denominational follower of Christ.
