Smith. According to the Crawfordsville library records and the information which you have provided for your grandfather, I do not believe this is the same gentleman. However, I was able to find something else for you that might help provide another clue in your search. I believe I have found the final resting place for both his first and second wives. You stated in other posts that he was married to Susan Melissa Boatman followed by marriage to Candis Arminta Boatman Putman. If you go to Findagrave and look up the Founders Cemetery in Wanamaker, Marion County, Indiana, you will find Susan M. Smith (FAG #53572077) with the appropriate dates of having been born in 1865 and died in 1889. I also believe that the entry for Candis A. Smith has been misspelled for the Founders Cemetery directory as Gandis A. Smith (FAG #53572261), and she has been listed as a male instead of a female. The headstone may have been very difficult to read, but the person who entered the information also cites that this person was married to J.A. Smith. There is currently no photograph of the headstone for this entry, but the dates of born in June 1870 and died August 1898 would fit precisely with your mother's story that the children were placed in the Guardians Home after the death of Candis Smith in 1898. Unfortunately, the Founders Cemetery has only been 70 percent documented at this time, so there is not a memorial listing for James A. Smith on Findagrave. However, unless he was buried with his third wife, Anna Elizabeth "Lizzie" Smith, he might be in the Founders Cemetery with his first two wives. A headstone may or may not have been placed for him. I hope this is helpful in your search and not a wild goose chase, but I felt this information was too close a match to your request and wanted to pass it on to you. This cemetery is very close to the eastside Indianapolis address where James Alford Smith lived for most of his life. In genealogy friendship, Melissa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
