In past years I have volunteered at the State Archives and was there when they moved from the State Library building to the converted warehouse on the east side. It was supposed to be a temporary move; however, they still are there in that building with a leaky roof and automatic sprinkler system. I believe they lost records stored in the State Library basement, and I believe they have lost records in the present location. There are concerns about what might happen to the records of the State in the event of natural disaster of any kind. The building is not structurally built to withstand tornadoes, for instance. Another concern is the small staff which answers queries in the order received........eventually. I am not criticizing the staff, which traditionally has suffered from lack of adequate numbers of employees for the tasks at hand, which includes dealing with records continually sent from all the counties in various formats. Some serious allocating of resources is needed if Archives staff adds on providing citizens with vital records over 75 years old. Sharon Mills
Thanks Sharon -- I used to go over there a lot and loved the gals in the microfilm section and most of the genealogy ones but one man and one gal (they were both mean). Always helpful the rest of 'em. Yep, indeed - need new microfilm readers too ... always seemed like there was never enough money put there :( On 10/25/2014 11:24 PM, s.m.mills via wrote: > In past years I have volunteered at the State Archives and was there when they moved from the State Library building to the converted warehouse on the east side.
