Karen, Mrs. Sarah Maddox, age 30-40, was a resident of Scott Twp, Montgomery Co, IN in 1840, according to the US Census of that year. She lived in the neighborhood of Farmer Doyel, Jr. With her lived a man 90-100 years of age, two boys 10-15 and one 15-20; there was a girl 5-10 and another 15-20. Hope these extra details about some Sarah -- maybe the one you're searching for -- will help someone recognize her. Also, Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941 shows a marriage between a Sarah Maddox and Alexander Scott in Montgomery County on 13 April 1848. I found what may be Alexander and Sarah in 1850 in Russell Twp, Putnam county, with Margaret 19, b. IN, Thomas 16, do, Alexander 13, do, Martha 12, IN, William 8 and Elizabeth 4, both born IN. There are no children listed as having a last name other than Scott, however, but it's interesting that Alexander (age 52) is a farmer and yet all children, even the 19 year old daughter, are listed as attending school during the previous year. Alexander and Sarah are both listed as born in KY. This may not be the Sarah you're hunting, of course. For one thing, in 1840, Alexander is in Russell Twp, Putnam County, with seven children and a wife. One boy under five, 2 under 10, 1 of age 10-15, one 15-20, and two girls, one under five and one 5-10. Can you blend those two groups of children from the 1840 census and assume that Alexander's previous wife died between 1840-1847 or 1848?
