    1. [InMontgo] Wabash and Erie Canal
    2. Here is a map of the Wabash and Erie Canal. _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wabash_and_Erie_Canal_map.jpg_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wabash_and_Erie_Canal_map.jpg) Did the residents of Montgomery Co use the canal for anything? Moving their farm product? Or was it too far away to be useful? Suzy The internet is not working well (the noon rush hour) but here are the WIRT men from Montgomery and neighboring counties, A-J. A.D. Wirt, Lizzie J Irwin 4 May 1886 Tippecanoe Charles Wirt, Mary F Walton 24 Jun 1891 Tippecanoe George Wirt, Lizzie Daily 28 Dec 1880 Montgomery Harry E Wirt, Clara A Phillips 30 Sep 1889 Clinton John Wirt, Barbara Clodfelder 28 Dec 1871 Fountain Also on the pickled peaches front: I have made FAKE pickled peaches. Living in Yankee country, I get hungry for familiar foods and try to create them. I used canned cling peach slices. Canned because they were cheapest; cling because they were firm enough to take the re-boiling; and slices because I wanted the spices to penetrate, and thinner seemed better. I made a spice marinade with the drained peach juice, white vinegar, cloves, broken cinnamon sticks; brought it to a boil, poured it over the peaches and refrigerated for a few days. Next time I do it, I'll try adding a chopstick dipped into cinnamon oil to stir it. That stuff is potent, and even a "drop" would be too much. That's how I spice commercial apple butter -- I dip a chopstick (wooden) in the oil, and stir the opened jar of apple butter. Put it away in the refrigerator for a few days to mellow. I got this idea because when the sons of WT and Mary Forrest Shelley made apple butter in a vat-sized kettle, Uncle Pat (Maurice), the son who was a chemist in Chicago, used to bring cinnamon oil for the project. A whole jar (one tablespoon???) went into the vat. Just to give you an idea of the quantities involved, the rather mechanical brothers rigged a boat oar to stir it, powered by a small engine. This needs re-writing -- sorry, guys -- but my husband wants his computer back!Kathy http://ingenweb.org/inmontgomery/ List Manager - inmontgo-admin@rootsweb.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to INMONTGO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. 3. They did most of their transporting on Sugar Creek but it did flow into the Wabash, only below the canal area. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Limequilla@aol.com> To: <inmontgo@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 24, 2009 12:14 AM Subject: [InMontgo] Wabash and Erie Canal > > Here is a map of the Wabash and Erie Canal. > _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wabash_and_Erie_Canal_map.jpg_ > (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wabash_and_Erie_Canal_map.jpg) > > Did the residents of Montgomery Co use the canal for anything?
