    3. Crawfordsville Daily Journal March 21, 1910 -- Civil War Veteran Dead - David W. Chauncey of Wingate Never Rallied From a Stroke of paralysis - Special to the Journal - Wingate, March 21 -- David W. Chauncey died at his late residence in Wingate Saturday evening, March 19, aged 76 years. The immediate cause of his death was paralysis. Early in the week he was stricken while walking from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dr. Dickerson and died without regaining consciosness. The larger part of Mr. Chauncey's life was spent in Illinois. He was born at Olney and was married when twenty years old. Seven years after his marriage he enlisted in the Eighteenth Illinois Infantry Volunteers. His army career lasted over a period of three years, during which time he fought in nine important battles. At Ft. Donnelson he was struck by bursting shell and remained unconscious for many hours. The marks of this injury were carried through life. The long illness which preceded his death and which culminated in paralysis is attricuted to this injury. Mr Chauncey was a member of the Wingate M.E. Church. The widow and four children surviving. The funeral service was held at 10 o'clock tuesday monring at the late residence, Rev. W.C. Aye of the M.E. Church officiating.
