Crawfordsville Weekly Journal, Friday, February 3, 1899 DEATH OF A PIONEER Hugh McCormick passed Away Last Evening at His Home East of the City Last Tuesday at his home three miles east of this city, Hugh McCormick passed from this life into the next at the advanced age of eighty-seven years. Grip and old age was the immediate cause of death. The funeral occurred at the family residence Thursday morning at half past ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. Mater. Interment at the Masonic cemetery. Hugh McCormick was born in Fermanna county, Ireland, June 24, 1812, and emigrated to America at the age of nine years. He resided in Ohio until 1854, when he moved to Crawfordsville, where he married to Nancy Line, Sept. 19, 1854. Mr. McCormick has been a resident of Montgomery county for forty-five years. In 1856 he and his wife moved to a farm three miles east of this city, where they have since lived and where were born to them seven children, four of whom survive their father. They are: Mrs. J.F. Guntle, Mrs. H. A. Chadwick, Mrs. W.C. Gray and Miss Jennie McCormick, of this city. Mr. McCormick enlisted in the army and served through the Mexican war, and was afterwards in the regular army for five years. He was a citizen of many sterling qualities and lived a long and useful life.
