Crawfordsville Journal Review 6-Aug-1960 4: 4- John McCabe Dead At 73- Founder Of Annual “Hoss Picnic” Here- John Albert McCabe, 73, founder of the annual McCabe Hoss Picnic, died at 3:40 p.m. Friday in Culver Hospital, where he had been a patient since June 26. Mr. McCabe had a saddle horse farm southwest of the city for the last 30 years. The Hoss Picnic, attracting competitors from a wide area, was conducted each year on or near his birthday anniversary. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and of the Athens and Bainbridge Saddle Clubs. A native of Putnam County, he was born Sept. 25, 1886 to John B. and Julia Hannalin McCabe. He was married to Nell Flannigan, who died in 1944. He attended Putnam County schools and Purdue University. Surviving are three brothers, Frank L., of Houston, Tex., James of Los Angeles and Harry of Greencastle; two sisters, Miss Marguerite McCabe of Joliet, Ill., and Mrs. Lucille Schlatter of Whiting, and an uncle and two aunts. Services are announced for 9 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard’s Church with Rev. Henry Ward celebrant of the Mass. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery at Greencastle. A Rosary will be recited at the Bright Funeral Home at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday.
