    3. OK, Joseph is definitely out as the father -- Montgomery County marriage records are super-useful! Samuel and Mary, eh? I wonder if they lived in Illinois for a while? > Date: Fri, 15 Oct 2010 13:36:41 -0400 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected]; [email protected] > Subject: Re: [InMontgo] NEWLIN > > Marriage Record 5 p 108 Montgomery Co IN Marriages > Groom: Walter P. The marriage was not a problem: Ancestry has the record. It shows the marriage of Bessie Lowery to Walter Newlin on 28 September 1911 in Montgomery County. It also gives birthdates for each: 3 Jan 1888 for Walter, and 29 Nov 1892 for Bessie. Then the 1920 census shows them as a married couple living, as you suggested in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. I did not find them in 1930, so the spelling may have been different. > > I looked for Bessie in 1910 and 1900. > > > > Home in 1900: possibly in Greenfield (Hancock Co) with Joseph and Luella, [Bessie], Goldie, and Eva. The trouble is, his surname is given as Loher - the copy looks like it, too. But a couple who might be his parents are next door, and their name is given as Lohek. The handwriting is neat, but this is a copy from the original notes. If you can find information about siblings, it might confirm this identification. The father, Joseph had 9, eight of whom were living in 1900. A Virginia accent might well have given an Indiana census-taker pause. I've seen worse distortions! If we accept the marriage record as a base line, your Bessie was born in Nov 1892: this Bessie was born in Nov 1892. > > The 1910 record for Bessie Lowery shows only one with the Nov 1892 birthdate. This Bessie is an "inmate" in the state school in Ft. Wayne. Don't take the "feeble-minded" too literally. Epilepsy and a number of other illnesses might have landed a child there. > > If you can find any relatives' names, such as brothers or sisters, it might help confirm or refute these possible identifications. > > Good luck in your search! > > > > Important Note: > > The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
