    3. Crawfordsville Journal Review 12-Mar-1964 8: 4- Funeral For Veeders Fire Victim Held- Funeral Services for Dr. Carl B. McCord, 80-year-old Veedersburg physician and Fountain County Health Officer, who died in a fire that swept through his home in Veedersburg Thursday night, March 5, were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fishero Funeral Home. The Rev. J. Samuel Pritchard, pastor of the Veedersburg E. U. B. Church, officiated and burial was in the Masonic Cemetery at Waynetown. Mrs. McCord was away, visiting since Sunday with their daughter, Mrs. Herman (Ona) Smith in Danville, Ill., and the veteran doctor was alone in the two-story, eight room frame residence at 711 N. Walnut St. Claudia Williams, Veedersburg High School junior, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Williams, who reside next door, saw Dr. McCord try to extinguish the flames and then could no longer see him because of smoke, according to Fountain County Coroner Ralph Nelson. An inquiry and investigation is in progress by Coroner Nelson, who attributed death to burns and suffocation. It was further believed that Dr. McCord had been smoking while resting on the couch in the living room when the fire burst out. Cause of the blaze has not definitely been determined. It spread rapidly through the house when discovered by Miss Williams about 9:45 p.m. Dr. McCord’s body was found near the front door, indicating he had tried to get outdoors. Veedersburg Volunteer Firemen Carl Butts, Ben Ghormley and Maurice Stonebraker discovered his body when they broke through the locked door. The entire interior of the McCord home was burned out. Veedersburg, Covington and Hillsboro fire fighters stayed at the scene after the recovery of the body to prevent the spread of the flames to other properties. Dr. McCord was a native of near Tangier, born Dec. 27, 1883, the son of William H. and Emily J. Heath McCord. 3. Kim, thank you so much for all the Emmert information! This one's causing me questions, though, which perhaps someone knows how to resolve. Evelyn and Letha, I thought, were Stella's daughters, and are given as survivors to young Lewis when he died in 1918. So Mrs. Evelyn Lowe of Crawfordsville is a stepdaughter? Clara didn't have an Evelyn, I thought. An Evelyn Emmert married a James Houk in 1914 in Boone County, but she would be too old for a daughter of Stella (and I do not have her attached to any other Emmerts in Boone County yet). I tried for Evelyn Marshall marriages, but none which seem to connect in Indiana Marriages. I tried for Evelyn Emmert marriages of later date, and didn't find those either. Any thoughts? Did Letha bring up her two younger sisters after her stepmother's death? Is Clara Marshall's maiden name known? Clara Walden married Jesse Marshall on 23 Dec 1907 in Montgomery County, lived in Adams, Parke Co, IN with baby Helen in the 1910 US Census. Jesse James Marshall, b. abt 1884 in Kentucky, d. 18 Aug 1916 in Crawfordsville.
