Crawfordsville Jouranl Review 10-10-1966 - Theodore C. Coffing, 91, a resident of this community since 1928, died at 4 p.m. Monday in Bowles Nursing Home, where he had been a patient two and a half months. He was a son of Abner and Elizabeth Ziegler Coffing nad was born in Fountain County Nov 29, 1875. He was educated in the schools of that county and was wed in 1904 to Lucy Ann Shultz. Surviving are three sons, Carroll, Richard and Francis; five daughters: Mrs. Paul Houston, Mrs. Lawrence Douglas, Mrs. Eva Davis, Mrs. Lucile Stull and Mrs. Anna Jean Hinshaw; two brothers, Clarence of Lafayette and Fred of Attica; a sister, Mrs. Sadie Dudley of Fillmore; 22 grandchildren and 26 greats. His wife and an infant son preceded Mr. Coffing in death. Funeral seravices are announced for 2 :30 p.m. Wed at Powers Funeral Home where friends may call. Rev. Elton Call will be the minister, and burial will bei n Greenlawn Cemetery at Wingate.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 9-13-1966 - Charles WIley Ball, 78 of Kettering, Ohio died Monday afternoon at Veterans Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. He was born in Montogmery co Jan 10, 1888, a son of Benjamin and Mary Bell Ball. He was married to Grace Faust Sept 12, 1917 in Crawfordsville. Educated int he county schools, Mr. Ball worked for Crabbs-Reynolds-Taylor feed suppliers for 21 years and Farm Bureau for 8. He retired in 1953. Hew as a member of Christian Union Church and Byron Cox Post 72 of American Legion. Mr. Ball was an army veteran of WWI. Surviving besides the widow are a sister, Mrs. Lizzie Gegner, a son, Benjamin R. Ball of Kettering, Ohio and 3 grandchildren. Mr. Ball was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bright Funeral Home with Rev. John Servies officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 pm. Crawfordsville Journal Review 9-28-1966 - Cecil G. Long, 64, died Wednesday night in a Jacksonville, FL hospital following an illness of three years. A native of Crawfordsville, Mr. Long was born March 27, 1902, to George and Effie Long. He was married to Blanche White in Russellville in June 1926. He worked for MidStates Steel & Wire in Crawfordsville for 10 years beofre being transferred to Jacksonville where he worked for 20 years with the firm. Surviving include the widow; two daughters, Sue Ellen and Mrs.Lois Pfeifer; three aunts, Mrs. Minnie Dale; Mrs. Grace Clifton and Mrs. Stella Strawser, an uncle, Richard McMurray 5 half sisters; a brother-in-law, Roscoe D. White and 8 grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 11-26-1966 - Ladoga - Mrs. Mary Maude Sillery, 86, longtime resident of Ladoga, died at 2 a.m. Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harley Rogers, where she had made her home the pst two years. She had been in failing health for three years. Mrs. SIllery was born south of Ladoga Nov 2, 1880, daughter of JOhn and Mary Brent Cline. She married George W. McDonald in 1907 in Indianpolis. In 1928 she married Oral Sillery, also in Indianapolis. Mrs. Sillery was a member of the Ladoga Church of the Brethren. She was a nurse and had taken her training at Old City Hospital, Indianapolis. Survivors include the daughter, a brother, Waldo E. Cline of Mason City, Iowa; four grandchildren and 10 greats. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Monday at the Gephart Funeral Home in Ladoga, Rev. Norris Rumbley pastor of the Ladoga Church of the Nazarene will officiate. Burial will be in New Ross Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday.
Crawfordsville Journal Review Nov 30, 1966 - Morris C. Quigg, 68, of Rt. 7, Greencastle Rd, died at 8:30 pm. Wednesday in Culver Hospital after an extended illness. A farmer, he was formerly employed by DeKalb Agriculture Assn, State Highway Dept. and city of Crawfordsville. He was a member of the Gravelly Run Friends Church. Born Feb 11, 1898, near Darlington, he was a son of Francis and Tacy Johnson Quigg. He was twice married. The first time to Vera Grimes, who died in 1941. His second marriage was to Ethel Busenbark, who survives. They were married August 15, 1943. Survivors in addition to the wife include 4 brothers: Clifford, Claude, Halford, and Curtis and four sisters, Miss Rena Quigg and Miss Mabel Quigg. Mrs. Oka Hymer and Mrs. Roy Sorrels. He was preceded in death by a brother. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bright Funeral Home here with Rev. Gene Sandefaur of New Market and Clyde Peck of Crawfordsville officiating. Burial in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.

26 Oct 1921 Crawfordsville Daily Journal p 1--Funeral services for the late Charles L. Owens were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the home of his mother, Mrs. Marshall Owens, 806 E. College Street, Rev. DP Odell of the First Baptist Church conducted the services. Mrs. Fern Atkinson and Mrs. HH Elmore sang. The high esteem in which Charley Owens was held was evidenced by the number and beauty of the floral offerings; also by the number of friends and acquaintances attending the last rites. The flower bearers were Mrs. Hays Birst, Mrs. David Marks, Mrs. Ed Collins, Mrs. George Hurley, Mrs. A Bruggs and Mrs. v. Cockefair. THe honorary pall bearers were Henry Meister, Fred Hoover, William Birch, Mrs. David Marks, Mrs. Ed CLaude Reese. The pall bearers were George Hurley, Frank Hoover, Joe Marshall, Wallace Gray, Ernest Wray and Ed Colings.
26 Oct 1921 Crawfordsville Daily Journal p 1-- Elzabeth Britton (sic) wilhite, aged 66, died tody at 6:30 a.m. at the home of her son, Elijah Bratton (sic) 602 E. Chestnut Street. A complication caused her death. Mrs. Wilhite who was well known to many persons in Crawfordsville, is survived by one son, Elijah Bratton (sic), and two daugthers, Mrs. RE Kostanzer and Mrs. Will Hastaday. The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hastaday 405 S. Walnut Street. Rev James Burkhardt of the Christian Church will officiate. Interment will be made at Oak Hill.
Oct 24 1922 Crawfordsville Daily Journal == New Market, Oct 24 -- James H. Armantrout, prominent banker of New Market died at his home here Monday afternoon. Mr. Armantrout's death came suddenly the well known man being stricken with heart disease at 1:15 o'clock. He lived only a few minutes after he was stricken. The deceased has been one of the leaders in this community for many years and has always taken an active interest in the welfare of New Market. Several years ago he founded the state bank here. Mr. Armantrout has always been president of this institution. His death comes as a great shock to his many friends here and throughout the county. Mr. Armantrout was years of age and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. The wife preceded him in death in 1914. Two children survive: Albert A. Armantrout and Mrs. Will Schwindler. Mr. Armantrout was prominently identified with business interests over the county being connected with a number of Crawfordsville institutions. Funeral services will be held Wednesday from the home at 1:30 o'clock. The service will bei n charge of the Rev. JB Johnson, pastor of the Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a member. Interment will be made in Masonic Cemetery at Crawfordsville.
Crawfordsville Daily Journal Oct 11, 1921 - An interesting incident was witnessed in the supreme court in Washington DC Friday when 3 women lawyers were admitted to practice before the high tribunal. They were MIss May Warner of Indianapolis, Miss Ruth Levy of New York City and Miss Clara Triedman Grose of Memphis, Tenn. Miss Warner is a Crawfordsville girl. she graduated from the local high school and taught in the county for a number of years. From here she went with her mother to Indianapolis and later,a fter the death of her mother went to Washington DC where she entered Washington College and graduated a few years later form the law department. Miss Warner is a sister of John H. Warner of this city.
Crawfordsville Daily Jounral 10-13-1921 - Fred Bratton died at his home, 904 W. Market Street, at 3 o'clock this morning after a long illness due to tuberculosis. Hew as born March 28, 1883, at Shellsburg, Iowa, but had lived here for a good many years. He married Miss Florence Cruea in March 1908 and to this unon two children were born, a four-year-old daughter and nine-month old son. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Hanna Bratton, who has lived with him for several years and by two brothers, John and Mills of near New Richmond. Funeral services will be held at the Liberty Church, six miles northwest of Crawfordsville at 11 o'clock Saturday monring. Brief services previous to this will be held at the home. Rev. FG Howard of the Trinity Methodist Church will officiate and interment will bein Liberty Cemetery.
Crawfordsville Daily Journal Oct 5, 1921 (Wed) The entire community was shocked Tuesday evening when it became known that David DeVore, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Devore, east Wabash Avenue had passed away, following a few days' illness from meningitis. THis is one of the saddest deaths to occur in this city for some time. The little fellow had had an attack of grippe and it is thought that he was left in a weakened condition. He had been in school however and Sunday attended Sunday School as usual. Monday morning he became ill and the attending physician diagnosed it as meningits. Everything possible was doen for the lad but to no avail and the end came at 5:30 Tuesday evening. David was born oct 9, 1913, in this city. He was a bright spirited little fellow, cheerful and happy at all times and enjoyed life to the fullest. His death brings sorrow not only to the home directly affected but to all who knew him. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved parents. Besides the parents, David leaves a little sister, Margaret and a grandfather, John P. Kelsey. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home and were in charge of Rev. MH Appleby, pastor of the first Methodist Church, burial took place at Oak Hill.
Crawfordsville Daily Journal 10-18-1921 - Ladoga Oct 18 -- Marinda Ellen Stark, daughter of WIlliam and Phoebe Stark died Saturday October 15 at the home of her son, Elmer, near Fincastle. Shew as born May 21, 1848, being 73 years old at the time of her death. The early days of her life were spent near Kokomo in Howard County until her marriage to Dr. John W. Sabin (sic) of Browns Valley Ind. To them was born one child, a son, John W. Jr., who died in August 1933. Dr. Sabin only lived one year after their marriage. She remained a widow until 1873, when she was united in marriage to Daniel Hays. To this union were born four sons: Raymond and Elmer of Fincastle; Thedore of Salt Lake City and Harry of Greencastle. She was left a widow again, her husband dying October 25, 1884. After the death of her second husband at Carle, Ind, she moved near Ladoga where she lived until 16 years ago, when she moved to Greencastle, living there until her death. She was a member of the Christian Church. Besides four sons she is survived by three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral was held at the Ladoga Christian Church Monday morning at 10:30, Rev. Smith officiating. John Kessler, Rev. Smith, Louise Myers and Carrie Robbins sang, My Faith Looks up to Thee, Nearer My God to Thee and Jesus Savior Pilot, Me. The burial was at Ladoga Cemetery.
Crawfordsville Daily Journal Thursday July 11, 1916 - The death of Mrs. Susan Wilson this morning at 4:30 marked the passing of one of the pioneer women of Crawfordsville and Montgomery County. A resident of the county all her life and of Crawfordsville for the past 30 years, Mrs. Wilson was known to hundreds of people in the community and was loved and respected by all who knew her. Her death followed an illness of 3 years' duration but her condition had been regarded as serious for only about 3 weeks. She died at her home, 704 John Street. Heart trouble caused her death. Mrs. Wilson was the wife of OW Wilson who survives her. She was born near Mace in 1839, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Watkins,w ho were among the earliest residents of the county, coming here when there was little but woods where this city now stands. She was one of 12 children born to this pioneer couple and her death leaves but one survivors in this large family, her brother living in Riley, Ohio. The deceased was married to Mr. Wilson on Jan 5, 1860 the ceremony being performed at her home near Mace. Six years ago Mr. and Mrs. Wilson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home here, the event being one of the most enjoyable occassions of their lives. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, having been affiliated with this church for many years. She was a true, faithful Christian. Three sons survive Mrs. Wilson. They are George of this city; Harry of Indianapolis and WL of Turlock, Cal. Funeral seravices will be held at two Thursday afternoon from the home of the deceased's son, goerge Wilson, 513 E. Market street. The services will be in charge of Elder Oliphant of the Primitive Baptist Church and burial in Oak Hill.

Crawfordsville Daily Journal 9-22-1916 - CH (Charles Holmes) Johnson and Mrs. Della McCalip were married yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Allen Eastlack in Crawfordsville, Rev. Mr. Moss of the Christian Church officiating. After a short trip they will be at home at the residence of Mrs. SW Caprenter in East Green Street.
Crawfordsville Journal Review June 9, 1952 -- Mrs. Clara Ellen VanCleave, 73, operator of the VanCleave Nursing Home for the past 15 years, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Culver Hospital. Mrs. Vancleave had been ill since February. She became seriously sick and was taken to the hospital Saturday. death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Born Sept 20, 1878, near Jamestown, she was the daughter of Andrew S. and Carrie Clements. She was married at Thorntown December 6, 1900 to Harry A. Vancleave who survives. Mrs. Vancleave was well known in this community. For 9 years she was matron of the Children's Home. She was a member of the Trinity methodist Church. Earlier in life, she had been active in the work of the Smartsburg Christian and Memorial Presbyterian churches. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, the Suburban stitchers and Women's Relief Corps. In addition to the husband, the survivors include a son, Hugh R. VanCleave; two daughtesr, Mrs. Richard Korty and Mrs. Richard Williams; a brother, Ray Clements; a half-brother, John Clements; a half sister, Mrs. John Barnhill, and 7 grandchildren, Raymond VanCleave, John, Nancy and Douglas Korty; Max A Cowan, Frederick Cowan and Esther Cowan. Funeral services will be held at Hunt & Son Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Rev. HH Elmore will be in charge with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends mayc all at the funeral home at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Born Sept 18, 1903, Mr. Stock wast he son of Willard and Ollie Stockton. He married Anna English of Darlington Feb 26, 1924. He had been employed as a laborer. Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. LaVada Ramsey and Mrs. Nada Demorett of Crawfordsville; four sisters, Mrs. Reba Henry ; Mrs. Margaret Conkright, , Mrs. Ruby Grader and Mrs. Nada Bottorff and two brothers, Lester and William Stockton. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the PRoffitt & Sons Funeral Home with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev. John R. Servies will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home.
Crawfordsville Journal Review 20 July 1944 p 9 -- Waynetown -- Mrs. Rachel Caroline Lowe, age 90, lifelong resident of the Wallace/Waynetown communities, d. at 11:30 o'cloc, Wed night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Adah Myers in Waynetown. Mrs. Lowe in declingng health for sev. years had been seriosly ill only a few weeks. Mrs. Lowe was b. May 23, 1854 at Wallace, the daughter of William Philpott & Caroline Krout Philpott, pioneer residents there. She was married Jan 2, 1869 to Elijah Lowe at Wallace. Her husband died many years ago. Mrs. Lowe was a member of the Christian Church. She is survived by her daughter, at whose home she died and 4 grandchildren 9 great grandchildren and one brother, Albert Philpott of Indianapolis. Grandchildren are Delmar B. Lowe, Richmond Va and Mrs. Louella Pennell, of Washington DC, children of a son, now deceased, and Herman D. Myers of Hillsboro, RR and M rs. Rachel Fruits of Crawfordsvile RR, children of Mrs. Myers. The body was taken to the Grenard and Servies Funeral Home where fun. services will be held Sat afternoon july 12, at two o'clock. The Rev. Ferd A Sharp will be in charge. Bur. in Luth Cem. at Wallace.
