    3. Kim, this was a delightful picture of an old council meeting. You know, I am a "selectman" in my town, and despite the distance in time and space, this meeting sounds just like home to me. "The miserable crossing" really struck a familiar chord! Imagine the long dresses sweeping through the dust (and mud) of the street, and how welcome a brick crossing must have been. I'm still excited because yesterday (I'm in DC) I had an unexpected chance to spend half a day in the DAR Library, and even though I didn't have any genie notes or computer with me, I had a great time. I thought I would focus on my favorite problem of the moment, adding documentation to the "weak" generation between John Fulwider and Joseph Henry Fulwider (there are two John Jacob Fulwiders of approximately the same age, and wild "guesses" as to the locations of birth/death). However, I didn't know the library well enough to get anywhere with that project, so I browsed the shelves and found a treasure trove of old county histories. I found a record that Michael Bannon, my gg-grandfather, was a trustee of the first church (Methodist Episcopal) built in Deerfield Twp of Warren County, Ohio, along with his brother-in-law James Clark. That made it a great dayfor me, even though the clock chimed long before I was ready to quit! > Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2008 01:26:26 -0500 > From: hancock@link2000.net > To: inmontgo@rootsweb.com > Subject: [InMontgo] The Old Town Cemetery > > Is there a catagory for general postings of the City council or Cemetery > > > > Crawfordsville Weekly, July 27, 1894 > > > > THE OLD TOWN CEMETERY > > Two Hundred and Twenty-Two Bodies Exhumed - The City Building to Be Papered > and plastered- Other Matters. > > The council met Monday evening at a late hour with Measrs, Thomas and > Robinson absent, both being out of the city. > Mr. Myers made remarks favoring the opening of Oak street, he and the > engineer having made a survey of it. > The Board of Public Improvements was granted further time to consider > the proposed addition of Mr. Ireland and also on the request of W. 3. Is there a catagory for general postings of the City council or Cemetery > Crawfordsville Weekly, July 27, 1894 > THE OLD TOWN CEMETERY Two Hundred and Twenty-Two Bodies Exhumed - The City Building to Be Papered and plastered- Other Matters. The council met Monday evening at a late hour with Measrs, Thomas and Robinson absent, both being out of the city. Mr. Myers made remarks favoring the opening of Oak street, he and the engineer having made a survey of it. The Board of Public Improvements was granted further time to consider the proposed addition of Mr. Ireland and also on the request of W. M. Darter for the vacating of eight feet on Grant avenue in front of his residence. J. H. Cook, as the superintendent of the work of exhumation of the bodies in the vacated portion of the old town cemetery, reported that 222 bodies had been exhumed. Of these 208 had been reinterred in the old town cemetery and 16 removed to other cemeteries. The expence of removal was in the neighborhood of $375. Of the bodies exhumed 174 were those of unknown persons. The question of placing two arc lights in front of the Cathlolic church for Rev. J. R. dinnen's jubilee came up, but was not disposed of, no one making a motion to put the thing through. Mr. McCampbell very properly roasted the miserable crossing now running across Main street from Myers & Charni's store and on motion a brick crossing was ordered put in. It was moved and carried to repair the city building with paper, paint, etc., and it was decided to receive bids for the same at the next meeting. A large photograph of the floral tributes at the funeral of the late W. Vanarsdall was presented to the council by the family of the deceased and received a vote of thanks. Gen. Lew Wallace was present and stated to the council that he had a petition to present to them signed by nearly all the business men in town and about 200 young men. At his suggestion it was voted to have a called meeting on Thursday evening to consider the petition which relates to the purchase of uniforms for Company B. The resolutions calling out the city commisioners to consider the opening and extentions of Oak street from College to Haw was unanimously passed. The question of the purchase of the lot just north of the city building came up but nothing was done, the council holding a secret after meeting to consider the question. The council adjourned without further business.

    3. > > Crawfordsville Daily Journal, Saturday, December 29, 1905 DEATH OF PROMINENT FARMER William Lambert Smith Died of Stomach and Heart Trouble William Lambert Smith, a prominent and highly respected farmer, who resided near Lapland, died Friday afternoon, aged nearly fifty-nine years, of stomach trouble and heart failure. During the past summer his health has gradually failed and he has become weaker and weaker until death relieved him. He was twice married, having been united in marriage with daughters of Thompson Davis, Eliza A. Davis, the first was the mother of five children. One girl, who is now dead, and four sons. The latter are all living and reside either in this or Boone counties with one exception. Wallace Smith lives in Seattle, John Smith, Abner Smith, and Oscar Smith are the other children of the first marriage. His second wife was Jessie M. Davis and to them four sons were born. All of these and both wives died some years ago and since that time Mr. Smith has resided with his children. In politics Mr. Smith was what may be called an independant voter as he voted for the man rather than the party. He was an exemplary citizen and had hosts of friends. He was an active member of the G. A. R. post at Parkersburg, a member of the Christian church at the same place and a member of Montgomery lodge of Masons in this city. His funeral will occur at the home near Lapland Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Mr. Burton, of Roachdale, officiating. The Masons of this city will have charge of the burial services. Internment at masonic cemetery.

    3. Crawfordsvile Weekly Journal. Friday, September 29, 1893 Abigal Davis, who died in this city on the 25th, was born in New Jersey, on the 5th day of Feb, 1795. She was married to Randolph Davis in 1816, in Butler county, Ohio. They came to Montgomery county, Ind., about the last of October 1826, and settled on Indiana creek. She emigrated from New Jersey to Ohio with her parents when she was a small girl. Her maiden name was Abigale Hoel. When they settled in this county it was mostly a wilderness, and their goods remained in the wagon in which they removed from Ohio, until a cabin was built, shich structure was completed the same day it was begun, the timber having been previously cut and hauled to the ground. She was a woman of great force of character, high intelligence, and had the envisible characteristic of wishing to live in independence on her own labor and management. She was kind and gentle, not only to her children, but to everybody else, and model of honesty and fair dealing. She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom grew to manhood and womanhood. Her funeral will take place from the Christian church at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, next, funeral sermon by Rev. W.J. Howe, with the assistance of other ministers of the city. Mrs. Davis was not a member of any church organization, but had a decided particularly for the Baptist denomination. > >
