    3. Mary Evans Stratton is still in the index, but gives a "page not found" error. I don't know how to find old images on the internet. Where are those Chinese when we need them! The index did give the source, the Ladoga Leader, April 30, 1897. 3. When I googled "Council Bluffs, Indiana" -- without the quotes -- all I got was a UFO report which from internal evidence (mention of I-29) seems to be intending Council Bluffs, Iowa. I'm so sorry to hear about the flooding. It's been a wet year for lots of folks who do not normally flood, I suspect. My sympathies for the lost genealogy. Me, too -- but it was water leaking in from above in my case. Papers had been transferred to a part of the barn where "of course" they'd be perfectly safe! Hmmm. 3. The Situation *Source: Scrapbook of Chester Peffley of Ladoga, (Montgomery County) Indiana 1890-1916 p 20 Let Elders rejoice, let Deacons dance, Let church officers laugh and prance; Now praise the Lord and be ye merry For you got a soon for Samuel Sperry Christians' whiskey will hurt no man; Drink it freely, drink all you can; Elders and Deacons gave us the saloon; Boosted the town, gave us a boom. You farmers now can come to town, Temperance cranks have been put down; You now can trade and call on Sperry, And take a nip of Tom & Jerry You need not still to Roachdale go; Our business men have made it so; That you can get your bitters now, And trade at home without a row. Wingert and Myers went out for game, Myers said, "You hold, and I'll skin the same." Baily took hold and sawed with Jim While Myers went out and worked his chin. Dr. Peacock "legged" for whiskey men, He signed men off again and again. When asked why he mixed in the matter He said it was for bread & butter. Elder Batman 'servant of God," Rode through mud and tramped the sod; Wore out his buggy, drove hard his cob, To get a saloon for Frazier, the Bob. "For God's sake men, save us the town," The Elder exclaimed, as he went around; "Give Bob a bar, thus save the town," The men so foul the court turned down. Elder Ashby superintends The Sunday School also commends Licensed whiskey for Sunday school boys, Sunday School whiskey never destroys. Edgar Ashby and Deacon Brown Want the saloon to save the town, Improve the morals, build up the church, Keep Sunday Schools out of the lurch. Now, my dear friends, can you not see Licensed saloons have sanctity; These holy men have heads that are level, They are too wise to serve the Devil. Christians' whiskey will hurt no man, Drink it freely, drink all you can; Elders and Deacons gave us the booze, The Devil will give them their dues. The hardware man voted with Moore, They worked to get us a whiskey store; He is supposed to have some sense, But tries to get both sides of the fence. He tells the farmer he wants no saloon, But takes the farmer for a loon; For out he goes to sign men off He gets his men. Farmers are soft. Jim goes to church upon Sunday, Works for the saloon upon Monday; Legislates for temperance laws, Helps saloon men and their cause. Now, my dear friends, I raise the query, Are these men morally better than Sperry? They built the den he sells grog in Are they not equal with him in sin? In the last day, when Samuels in Hell Will not these men be with him as well; Or, will they say, when Judgment's in session "My dear Lord it's a political question. Now, farewell friends Good night, I'll kiss you There'll be hot stuff In the next issue. Jim L. Moore *

    3. Don't think this is the one - he was born in 1893 - probably his brother, Morris Wesley Hirshburg took the Gershwin picture as (other than when he was off to war in 1918, he was photographer here from at least 1910-1930 and possibly longer which would be in the Gershwin time frame. Their father, John Morris Hirshburg was also a photographer but he went back to Richmond Indiana and died reasonably young in 1914. Morris died in Greencastle Indiana and is buried there -- I could see if I could get his obituary tomorrow when I go get your Pefley stuff. 3. Having been juror in a Federal trial I' more horrified by the names of the jury being published. TL's comment: bizarre! Àt the trial where I served, relatives of the accused loudly threatened us on the sidewalk as we returned from lunch. The judge sent us home after the afternoon session via his private door. We convicted Henry anyway! Despite the threats. And just think -- Hirshberg died when I was a freshman in high school-- don't remember a thing about it! K Sent from my iPhone-- please excuse the typos! 3. Found an article on ancestry that was about him The Palladium-Item Richmond, Ind Tuesday March 26, 1957 Sheriff Edward Cordell said early Tuesday morning Miss Ethel Wise, 30 years old, Belleview Heights, Centerville in a veral statement admitted the fatal shooting late Monday night of Roy Hishburg, prominent Richmond photographer. No details were immediately available. Hirshburg had earlier been reported in the company of Miss Wise and Mrs. Anna McFarland, 41 years old, Hagerstown shortly before the shooting. Roy Hirshburg, nationall yknown Richmond photographer was shot to death late Monday night on the sidewalk nearly in front of his studio at 710 Main Street. Police were seeking the alyer who was believed to have escaped in a car. Details of the killing were spotty. Hirshburg apprently was alone. Two Centerville men, John Kempton and Clayton Whirley, told a Palladium-Item reporter they heard a woman scream and at the same time saw a body lying in the gutter. They said they saw a car being driven away at high speed and run a red light at the intersection of 7th and Main Streets. They said they chased the car north on 7th but lost it. No reason for the shooting was immediately learned. He apparentsly died almost immediatley. Police said they found 3 .22 caliber shells near Hirshburg's body. One report said Hirshburg was leaving Wheeler's restuarnt with another man when a woman on the sidewalk fired 3 shots at him from a rifle. The report said the woman then ran to a car parked nearby, got into the driver's seat and sped away. Dr. H.D. Hill, Wayne County coroner said preliminary examination showed Hirshburg was shot once in the heart and once in the head. Police were looking early Tuesday morning for a 1955 red and white Chevrolet convertible. A sign on Hirshburg's studio door read, "Closed all day Monday, open rest of week." Mrs. Zella Wroe, an employee at Wheelers said Hirshburg stopped in the restaurant a few minutes to see about a key for his studio that he had made arrangements to be left there. She said he met Ray Mitrone, brother of Police Chief Dan Mitrione there and left with him after about 15 minutes. She said the two talked on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant a few minutes after which Hirshburg walked west in the direction of his studio and Mitrione crossed the street. She said a few minutes later Mitrione rushed into the restaurant and called to her to call the police. Hirshburg was about 64 years old. He opened a studio in Richmond in 1921 and formerly operated one at Greencastle. He achieved international fame for his photography and often was called upon to judge photo shows. In 1955 he was named as one of the top 20 photographers in the US by Paul Lindwood Gittings of Houston, Tex, president of the Photography Association of America. Hirshburg, who also was widely known for his wit and humor, at one time said he "mugged" everybody from one president of the US to tramps and one notorious gangster. Hirshburg, who was divorced from his wife, has a daughter, Henrietta Hirshburg, New York. On 5/3/2013 11:48 AM, Kathleen lynch wrote: > Googling this morning!
