I love stuff like that -- I was a Sociology major. Oh, and I'm glad for the clarification that the little relishes were Penna Dutch. After reading your description, I looked up recipes for Spiced figs and pickles peaches. LOL! (see below) My book right now is called "Death in Early America. The History and Folklore of Customs and Superstitions of Early Medicine, Funerals, Burials and Mourning." By Margaret COFFIN. Ok, I thought it was funny. Published 1976; It's from the library. And it is not sad at all...it's just a compendium of things she and her folklore students have found all wrapped up in a book. Karen could write a book just like it for Montgomery Co, et al, based on Hap's Diaries, obits and gravestones, and patent medicine ads in the newspaper from the 19th century. Mr Wert had been confined to his home nearly all of this winter and during the past few weeks his condition had become so critical that his death had been expected for some time. Mr. Wert was born near Alamo on March 10, 1844. He was a son of Richard and Amanda Compton Wert, who came to this locality when it was practically a wilderness. Mr Wert grew to manhood on his parents' farm and he was educated in the common schools of that day. While a young man he began life for himself as a farmer and by hard work and economy became one of the substantial, prosperous farmers of the county. He was rated one of the best judges of live stock, especially cattle, in this locality. In 1900 he gave up active farming and came to Crawfordsville, where he and his family have since resided. Mr. Wert was married on October 21, 1875 to Angeline Hankins, whose parents had come to this county from Ohio years ago. One daughter born to this union, Mrs. Rose Line, wife of John B. 1. [InMontgo] from Hamilton Co OH to Montgomery Co
    2. Redenbaugh is another family that did the same, coming from SE PA, having lived in (at least) Berks, Dauphin, and Northumberland Cos before Hamilton co OH. Henry and Margaret Redenbaugh bought land in Northumberland, improved it, and sold it back to one of two men they had bought it with.  With their profit they could finance their numerous children's purchases of less expensive land in Hamilton Co OH.    Their children moved north, west, and north west, with Frederick coming to Montgomery Co IN.  A brother came to Fountain at  the same time. I have wondered if there are more families with this pattern but haven't researched it.
