Fruits, 87, of Crawfordsville died at 4:05 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital at Lafayette. Mr. Fruits was a farmer and a 27-year school bus driver. He had served in the Department of Instruction at Indianapolis, having retired in 1972. He was a member of Wesley Chapel Church, a life-member of the Crawfordsville Rotary Club and a past president of the Indiana State Association of School Bus Drivers. He was a graduate of Waynetown High School. He was born March 15, 1906, near Waynetown to Walter and Estella Bunnell Fruits. He first married Berneice Westrup in July 1930. He later married Carolyn Humphreys Edwards in June 1935. In February 1976, he married Georgia Switzer Powers. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Harry L. of Crawfordsville and Donald Joe of Waynetown; two daughters, Mrs. Bud (Marilyn) Nuttall of Dearborn, Mich., and Mrs. James (Kay) Holman of Crawfordsville; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Mike (Cindy) West of Leewood, Kan.; a brother, Glenn B. of Louisville, Ky.; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, a sister, two stepsons, a granddaughter and a great-grandchild. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cramer Shoemaker Funeral Home at Waynetown. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Humphrey [sic Jonathan died in 1968], died at 9:15 o’clock (CDT) Friday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Audra Smith, R. F. D. 1, Ladoga. She had been ill six months. Born July 23, 1879, at Elmdale, Mrs. Humphrey was the daughter of Enoch and Elizabeth Swank Tyler. She married Jonathan Humphrey, of near Elmdale, 55 years ago. She was a member of the First Christian church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Martin, of Lebanon, and Mrs. Audra Smith, o f near Ladoga; three sons, Palmer Humphrey, of Florida, Ralph Humphrey, of Fort Wayne, and Paul Humphrey, of Crawfordsville; two half-sisters, Mrs. Fay William and Mrs. Beulah Dobkins, both of Hoopeston, Ill.; a half-brother, Frank Tyler, of Hoopeston, Ill.; a step-brother, Walter Gephart, of California; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two children, Clifton and Mildred preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock (CDT) Monday afternoon at the Proffitt & Sons Funeral home, with burial at Oakland cemetery north of Elmdale. Rev. Paul Million and Rev. Ray Britton will officiate. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home.

Mr. Doan was a retired real estate broker, having given up his commission in 1981. He had been employed with Cloverleaf Builders at Indianapolis until 1978. He was a veteran of World War II and graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1933. He attended Wabash College. He was a member and past master of Advance Masonic Lodge 664 and a life and charter member of the National Association of the Legion of Honor. He was a member of the former United Methodist Church at Parkersburg; Marrott Shrine Legion of Honor at Indianapolis; Crawfordsville York Rite, Knights Templar 25; Order of Eastern Star, Waynetown chapter 435; American Legion Post 777 of Indianapolis; and VFW Post 2985 of Fort Benjamin Harrison. Born Aug. 29, 1915, in Potomac, Ill., he was a son of James and Pearl Holloway Doan. He was married to Helen Humphreys on June 14, 1936. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Steven of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Alan of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Frances Chumley of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and two grandchildren. A sister is deceased. Services are scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Thomas Funeral Home at Waynetown with the Revs. Bill Flanigan and Allen Sparks officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Masonic memorial services conducted by the Waynetown Masonic Lodge will be at 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Saturday. The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society and Shrine Crippled Childrens Hospital. These may be made at the funeral home.

Waynetown Masonic Cemetery Records, Crawfordsville District Public Library Website 1943 FORMER RESIDENT OF CITY EXPIRES IRVIN HAMM DIES IN LAPORTE HOSPITAL AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS Irvin Hamm, 35, a former resident of this city, died at a LaPorte hospital Thursday morning after a brief illness, according to word received here by relatives Thursday. Mr. Hamm was born in Waynetown, but had spent most of his life in Crawfordsville. He was a barber. He left Crawfordsville three years ago. His wife, two sons, Robert and Fred, one daughter, Betty Jo, and one sister, Mrs. George Douglas, of Crawfordsville, and a brother, Harold Hamm of Crawfordsville, survive. His father, Lonnie Hamm, of Catlin, Ill., also survives. Mr. Hamm was born March 13, 1908, the son of Lonnie and Mary Hamm, the mother preceding him in death in 1924. He was married to Inez Humphreys of this city on Aug. 20, 1928. He was a member of the Baptist church. Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Proffitt & Sons mortuary, with the Rev. Russell Rice of Oxford officiating. Burial will be at Waynetown. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home as the body will be kept there preceding the rites.

Humphreys, 90-year-old retired farmer, died Sunday evening at his home, 1009 Lane Ave. He had been ill since March 1967. A native of Bismark, Ill., he was a son of Samuel and Sarah Jane Griffin Humphreys. He was married at Mellot on Oct. 9, 1895 to Ina Myrtle Tyler, who preceded him in death. Mr. Humphreys was a member of the Elmdale Methodist Church. Surviving are three sons, Palmer of Vero Beach, Fla., Ralph of Indianapolis and Paul of Crawfordsville; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Martin of Lebanon and Mrs. Audra Smtih of Crawfordsville; six brothers, Wilber of near Crawfordsville, Frank of Hollywood, Calif., Asa and Charley of Hillsboro, Grover of Bismark and Carl of Waveland; two sisters, Mrs. Zella Potter of Alvin, Ill., and Mrs. Carrie Fruits of near Crawfordsville, and six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Mr. Humphreys was the eldest of 16 children. Six brothers, two sisters, a son and a daughter are deceased. Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Monday. Rev. John Servies will officiate, with burial in Oakland Cemetery near Elmdale.

Mrs. Trout was born April 23, 1865, 9 miles east of Crawfordsville, a daughter of Daniel and Sarah Hymer Shaver. She was one of 9 children. She married Sherman a. Trout in 1895. He died in 1933. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Bruce Luckett, 3 nephews, Robert Shaver; Noel Shaver and Jesse Caster , 5 nieces, Mrs. Willis Farris; Mrs. Claude Clark. Mrs. John Campbell, Mrs. Glen Saidla and Mrs. Forest Ward. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home with Rev. John DeKruyter Officiating. Crawfordsville Journal Review 15 Jan 1962 p 2--Mrs. Ethel (Dot) Trout, a prominent Crawfordsville music teacher and retired First Methodist Church organist, died Monday morning at the Rudisill Nursing Home where she had resided since Dec 23. She was 77. Mrs. Trout was a teacher of piano and organ and had been active in music circles here for many years. She served as organist at First Methodist for 25 years before she gave up that responsibility a few years ago. Even then, however, she continued to play the chimes at the church and did so until recently. She was a member of the Crawfordsville Music Club, a graduate of the Metropolitan School of Music at Indianapolis, a member of the Morning Musicale and the Coterie Club. She was also a member of the Crawfordsville Order of Eastern Star, the First Methodist Church and was a 1901 graduate of CHS. Mrs. Trout was born in Crawfordsville July 16, 1884 and spent most of her life here. Her parents were John D. Moore and Suzanna Hathaway Moore, in 1902 she married Roy H. Trout, a service station equipment salesman who died in 1956. The couple lived in Crawfordsville except for 10 years when they reisded in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Besides her husband, Mrs. Trout was also preceded in death by a sister, Alta Moore. Survivors include a son, Gordon Trout; a daughter, Mrs. Kathry Tibbals; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bright Funeral Home. Dr. Claude McClure, former pastor of First methodist who now lives in Greencastle will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Tuesday

    3. Crawfordsville Daily Journal 5 Jan 1906 - Several of the reslatives and friends of this place attended the funeral of Lambert Smith last Sunday. Crawfordsville Daily Journal 30 Dec 1905 -- William Lambert Smith, a prominent and highly respected farmer who resided near lapland, died Friday afternoon aged nearly 59 years of stomach trouble and heart failure. During the past summer his health was gradually failed and he has become weaker and weaker until death relieved him. He was twice married, having been united with daughters of Thompson Davis, Eliza A. Davis the first was the mother of 5 children. One girl, who is now dead and four sons. The latter are all living and reside either in this or Boone counties with one exception. Wallace Smith lives in Seattle, John Smith, Abner Smith and Oscar Smith are the other children of the fisrt marriage. His second wife was Jessie M. Davis and to them four sons were born. All of these and both wives died some years ago and since that time Mr. Smith has resided with his children. In politics Mr. Smith was what may be called an Independent voter as he voted for the man rather than the party. He was an exemplary citizen and had hosts of friends. he was an active member of the GAR post of Parkersburg, a member of the Christian Church at the same place and a member of Montgomery Lodge of masons in this city. The funeral will occur at the home near Lapland Sunday mroning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Mr. Burton of Roachdale officiating. The Masons of this city will have charge of the burial services. Interment at Masonic Cemetery.

    3. Looking for information on Veteran James McGrew, he has no stone, and I can not find anything on site, either library or Montgomery, his is buried next to a Lydia A. McGrew stone has 1858 - 1928 Mother no stone for James, I found pension record on ancestry listing James McGrew, Veteran and Lydia as wife, pension records filed in both Ohio and Illinois?? I did find a marriage also James T. McGrew married Lydia Bones July 1, 1869 McDonough, Illinois, yet it looks as they are buried in Oak Hill Grant, (Masonic). Any information would help greatly on getting a stone for this veteran, we know where he is buried just need conformation this is the right one. Kim Hancock > >

The first one below does although it doesn't list his company :) Crawfordsvillle Daily Journal 2-17-1927 -- Alvin ZACHARY, formerly a resident of this city, died at Hammond after a short illness, according to word rec'd here by a great niece, Mrs. Paul Bastiain of this city. Mr. Zachary was a Civil War veterab and was about 80. The body will be brought to the Hunt Funeral Parlors over the Monon tonight. The funeral arrangements will be announced later. Crawfordsville Daily Journal 2-18-1927 p 1 -- Alvin R. Zachary, age 79 who has been ill for several weeks with cancer passed away on Wed at the home of his niece, Mrs. HL McDonald and Mrs. CP Bastain at Hammond. The body was brought here this morning and taken to the Hunt Funeral Homne where friends may view the body until Sun afternoon at which time funeral services will be held at Memorial Church in charge of the pastor, Rev EA Arthur with interement at the Masonic cemtery. Mr. Zachary formerly resided in this city. His wife preceded him in death several years ago. He is survied by 5 brothers, Samuel of WHitesville, Redbou of Crawfordsville, MH Zachary of Waveland, J. There is an obit listed 1927 but it does not list him as a veteran, Co K, 154th Indiana Infantry on the tombstone.
