    3. Hi Karen, I did get in touch with Carol Breeden and am very excited to work with her on it--the name is a winning match! Yes, there are some discrepancies with the 1840 and 1850 censuses; however, in 1850 I noted that the oldest daughter was about 20, so it is very possible that the son was even older and was already living on his own. That doesn't ensure the 1840s daughters are the same as those listed in 1850, but it is a possible explanation for the missing son. MAYBE the missing son is the Claude Coltrain filing for divorce! I would have no idea how to find that. Do death certificates at this time list parents? I mean, who knows about Claude, but that would be good information to know about death certificates. I will definitely look into the marriage affidavits; that could be a really excellent resource for me. Also, could you send that last link to me again? It has disappeared from my inbox (probably my children are to blame...). It looked like a clue to one of the censuses I found and the mysteries it presented... Thank you so much!! 3. Here's another part of the divorce saga --- ahhh, I love genealogy :) Heehee Leona A. FERGUSON from Claude R. COLTRAIN Crawfordsville Review Thursday Jan 20, 1916 A petition for allowance was filed in the circuit court yesterday by Mrs. Leona A. Coltrain of Darlington. Several days ago, Claude R. Coltrain of Darlington brought suit for divorce alleging she found fault with him and would not live on a farm he had rented. In the petition she denies his allegations saying he deserted her and that she was forced to go and live with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Ferguson of Boone Co. The wife claims that the plaintiff's father, John D. Coltrain is worth $30,000 and that her husband has an expectancy of $10,000. SHe prays the court for $5 weekly during pendency of action and for $150 to prepare to fight the case. Mrs. Coltrain is represented by A. J. Sheeby. His lawyers are McAdams & Jones of Lafayette. 3. Alisha - here's one of the daughter's marriages you may have missed *COTTRAIN (COLETRAIN), RACHEL CORBET, JAMES January 9, 1851 3 313 Also, Indiana marriages of this time frame are basically so & so married so & so on such & such a date. Basically, what is above - there are no parents etc. on them. Montgomery County does have a unique source I spearheaded a grant (and the work) for many years ago that often gives the names of parents. They are marriage affidavits. A parent might write: Nancy, my daughter, has my permission to marry James Jones today. Or, I am writing permission for my daughter to get married. Sometimes they were lengthy or funny or short or zip -- we used to laugh & call them today's SS cards. The Crawfordsville Library have them and I could look next time I go or you could call them and have them check the orange marriage affidavits for those two marriages and hopefully, one will give Solomon's name as the parent. 765-362-2242 I think extension 3 but you better listen to the speal to make sure to get reference/local history :) Hope some of this helps *

    3. Hello! I am researching the Coltrain family. I have found Solomon Coltrain/Coltrane (1800-1882) in several places in Montgomery County in the census, as well as in the index for first land owners in Montgomery County (via the excellent county website--thank you Karen!). In the 1850 census I found him with his wife 'Esther'. They are listed as being born in North Carolina, and I believe I found their North Carolina marriage indexed online, but the names read Solomon Coltrane and Hester Andrew, who I have seen it rumored online, later moved from NC to Indiana. I am looking for a solid link to verify that Solomon and Hester from the marriage record are the Solomon and Esther in my line in Indiana. I have not been able to access any birth or death information for either of them, nor marriage records for their children (their daughter Mary Jane's marriage to George W Anderson is indexed on the county website, but I do not have the record itself) to verify the mother's name. I am hoping anyone knows of any records that may give me that additional information! 3. The Waveland bank was going strong at that point but was robbed the next year. Don't know about the rest - as far as I know they were all okay. Good question on if same year and it is not -- it goes through 1939 and is pretty much the same thing except a few of the pages are for specific persons (Neal McClain) and a few are store-related "Coal for the House; Coal for the Store" type things. The thing sure won't fit in our scanner -- it's probably 18" long but fairly thin. On 10/11/2013 2:55 PM, S. R. 3. Karen, I think this is limited usefulness for genealogy research. If someone is trying to establish a location in Montgomery county in 1931 (one year after the 1930 census), then perhaps it would work for them. If it would be possible to list unique surnames, that might be OK; but eliminating duplicates might be more work than it's worth. Do all 177 pages cover 1931, or does it continue? Perhaps scanning the documents would be easier. Considering what was occurring economically in the country in the early 1930's, having a "friendly banker" at the corner store must have been a lifesaver for many residents. Do you know if any banks in Montgomery county closed in the early to mid 1930's? Basically, it looks like a store ledger of the general store in my hometown (thanks Denny McCarty for letting me borrow it :) BUT this is the kicker -- why would it be for only $5 or $10 -- there are 177 pages of this - mostly the same people. Another question is it worth my time typing all of it? Think this is the only ledger with local names -- the other ledgers (about 8 of 'em) are all that he purchased $3 of milk from Maplehurst type things - is that worth typing as well? NEED SOME OPINIONS here - help me out #1 What is this exactly (I'm wondering if he was the local go get money from place) #2 Is it worth typing the other 170 pages ? #3 what about the other ledgers

    3. Karen, This appears to me to be a type of receivable ledger. The store was apparently lending small amounts to some of its customers. The ledger shows the date the money was lent, the "No" column references the document (similar to a receipt) and the paid column indicates how (and sometimes the date) it was paid; ie; cash, check or note. The note was probably a more formal document.
