    1. [InMontgo] records at the Archives
    2. s.m.mills via
    3. In past years I have volunteered at the State Archives and was there when they moved from the State Library building to the converted warehouse on the east side. It was supposed to be a temporary move; however, they still are there in that building with a leaky roof and automatic sprinkler system. I believe they lost records stored in the State Library basement, and I believe they have lost records in the present location. There are concerns about what might happen to the records of the State in the event of natural disaster of any kind. The building is not structurally built to withstand tornadoes, for instance. Another concern is the small staff which answers queries in the order received........eventually. I am not criticizing the staff, which traditionally has suffered from lack of adequate numbers of employees for the tasks at hand, which includes dealing with records continually sent from all the counties in various formats. Some serious allocating of resources is needed if Archives staff adds on providing citizens with vital records over 75 years old. Sharon Mills

    3. If they only have Indiana marriage records from 1958 forward, its going to be 19 years before we see the first of those online. Any chance that's a typo for 1858? Marsha L. These online historical records, those older than 75 years, will start to become available in 2015, with the completion date expected by the State's Bicentennial in 2016. This will be the largest online collection of the State of Indiana's materials ever digitized. "As we head toward the 2016 Bicentennial and celebrate Indiana's past, this initiative serves not only present-day Hoosiers by improving accessibility to records, but also future Hoosiers as they look back at state history," Governor Pence said. This partnership saves the State of Indiana more than $3.2 million---the cost to index, scan, and make accessible the materials, and would have taken the state more than a decade to complete. It also provides another mechanism to both access the records and preserve the remaining originals from excessive use and degradation, and provides an additional copy in case original copies are destroyed. For the last two years, the Indiana Commission on Public Records has been working with the Indiana State Department of Health's (ISDH) Vital Records office to achieve this partnership. Both the ISDH and State Archives will receive a copy of the digital images and indexes---ISDH will use its copy to improve service to Hoosiers by streamlining the process of accessing records and providing official copies to citizens, while State Archives will provide access to the records more than 75 years old at its facility. Ancestry.com also will provide access to its members for the historical records when the project is completed. The birth and death certificates date back to the early 1900s, and the State's marriage records from 1958 through 2005. http://indianagenweb.com/inmontgomery/ List Manager - inmontgo-admin@rootsweb.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to INMONTGO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Thanks Sharon -- I used to go over there a lot and loved the gals in the microfilm section and most of the genealogy ones but one man and one gal (they were both mean). Always helpful the rest of 'em. Yep, indeed - need new microfilm readers too ... always seemed like there was never enough money put there :( On 10/25/2014 11:24 PM, s.m.mills via wrote: > In past years I have volunteered at the State Archives and was there when they moved from the State Library building to the converted warehouse on the east side. 1. [InMontgo] HELP -- I ran out of time and would REALLY like to know this gal's maiden name :(
    2. Karen Zach via
    3. Anyone have some time to try to find who this gal is Love to know her maiden name? I know her first name is Agnes (and from the 1900 census she was born in Indiana (assumedly Vigo County) in October 1868 and died 8 Feb 1910 -- she and Charles A. Talburt (b. Sept 1865 - he was a printer) had been married 3 years Source: Waveland Independent newspaper, Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana 22 April 1910 Friends of Charles Talburt will regret to hear of the death of his wife which took place at the home of Mrs. L.D. Stone, near French Lick. Mrs. Stone sends the following obituary: Agnes, wife of Charles A. Talburt of Springfield, Ill, died at the home of her mother-in-law, Mrs. L. Dow Stone of French Lick, after an illness of five weeks of heart trouble, of which she has been a sufferer many years. She was kind and affectionate and made friends where ever she went. She was educated at St. Marys-in-the-woods, Terre Haute and died in the Catholic faith, Feb 8, 1910. She came to French Lick Christmas to assist in caring for L. Dow Stone who is in a helpless condition, but the Lord saw fit to take her to join the darling babe that preceded her to that better land 10 years ago. She leaves a husband, one brother and two sisters besides many friends to mourn her loss. Her remains were taken to Terre Haute her childhood home for interment.

    1. [InMontgo] Added & After-Hours research (if you're close anyway)

    3. So sorry I've #1 not added much of late (I WAS doing a maternity leave that has now turned into a semester job so gone is my fun-time but still trying to add a few things each month -- don't worry, when I'm stuck in this winter, I'll be sure to make-up for it :) and .... #2 DO want to tell you about the After-Hours lock-in at the Crawfordsville District Public Library If you've not been to one of these Pizza Suppers, they are sooooo much fun. It's so nice to be with other genealogists who have the same interests. Pizza is always good and there's usually some type of dessert. (Shamedly, that's always my fav part :) Although it really doesn't cost, most of us donate $4-5 - cheap meal :) There is always drinks, as well. Must arrive before 5:00 p.m. - go to the Donnelley Room, lower level then when we get done mowing on the pizza and whatever, Dellie <mailto:delliejean@yahoo.com> will begin taking us up to the Local History/Ref area to work. I usually stay until it closes out but have to leave early on the 24th but DO hope to see several there :) Here's a link to the poster http://indianagenweb.com/inmontgomery/after-hrs-ocft-2014.JPG

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: martock Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.montgomery/1261.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Terry, I just saw your posting requesting information in Montgomery County, Indiana, on a grave for James A. Smith. According to the Crawfordsville library records and the information which you have provided for your grandfather, I do not believe this is the same gentleman. However, I was able to find something else for you that might help provide another clue in your search. I believe I have found the final resting place for both his first and second wives. You stated in other posts that he was married to Susan Melissa Boatman followed by marriage to Candis Arminta Boatman Putman. If you go to Findagrave and look up the Founders Cemetery in Wanamaker, Marion County, Indiana, you will find Susan M. Smith (FAG #53572077) with the appropriate dates of having been born in 1865 and died in 1889. I also believe that the entry for Candis A. Smith has been misspelled for the Founders Cemetery directory as Gandis A. Smith (FAG #53572261), and she has been listed as a male instead of a female. The headstone may have been very difficult to read, but the person who entered the information also cites that this person was married to J.A. Smith. There is currently no photograph of the headstone for this entry, but the dates of born in June 1870 and died August 1898 would fit precisely with your mother's story that the children were placed in the Guardians Home after the death of Candis Smith in 1898. Unfortunately, the Founders Cemetery has only been 70 percent documented at this time, so there is not a memorial listing for James A. Smith on Findagrave. However, unless he was buried with his third wife, Anna Elizabeth "Lizzie" Smith, he might be in the Founders Cemetery with his first two wives. A headstone may or may not have been placed for him. I hope this is helpful in your search and not a wild goose chase, but I felt this information was too close a match to your request and wanted to pass it on to you. This cemetery is very close to the eastside Indianapolis address where James Alford Smith lived for most of his life.
