    3. Crawfordsville Daily Journal, Thursday, October 4, 1934 JOHN WRIGHT, 98, DIES NEAR ALAMO Oldest Man In The County Passes Away At Home Form Heart Attack John W. Wright, age 98, oldest man in Montgomery county, died suddenly at his home near Alamo Wednesday evening. Mr. Wright who failed to return home for supper after cutting posts on his farm, was found dead in a field about 200 yards from the house. Coroner A. L. Loop after examining the body said Mr. Wright had suffered a heart attack. The deceased was born Aug. 5, 1836, near Alamo and had spent his entire life in Ripley township. He was the son of Ery and Sarah McGathey Wright. Mr. Wright was first married to Margaret Weir who passed away many years ago. His second wife was to Mary Keller, who died in 1919. Those surviving are one son, Ery, of near Alamo; two daughters, Harriet E. Wright, at home, and Mrs. Rosella Swisher, 111 west Market street, two step-daughters, Mrs. Ansley Healey of Alamo, and Mrs. Clara C. Matthews of Alamo, eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. The body was taken to the Shuler & Grenard undertaking parlors in Waynetown and funeral services will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. J. C. Overman of the Waynetown Baptist church will officiate and burial will be made at Stonebraker cemetery near Alamo.

    3. September 30, 1960- Woman Is Found Ill In Her Home Of Malnutrition- Miss Pearl E. Britton, 87, was removed to Culver Hospital about 7:30 p.m. Friday after she was found ill at her home at 415 E. Franklin St. Julian Carter, her guardian, said he was called by a relative who became alarmed when the woman had not been seen for some time and failed to answer her door. Carter summoned Warren McGaughey, attorney and police. After failing to rouse the woman, they entered the house to find her in a weakened condition and asleep on her bed. A physician was summoned to examine the woman and ordered her removed to the hospital. She was reported in fair condition and appeared to be suffering from malnutrition. (Note: Pearl Britton died in April 1961)

Rev. John Cassidy of Westport, a former pastor of Waynetown Baptist Church, officiated and was assisted by Rev. Home M. Cole, pastor of Waynetown Christian Church. Mrs. M. B. Snyder was organist and played sleected hymns, "Beyond the Sunset," "Going Home" and "In the Garden." Pall bearers were Milton Venis of Brownsburg; James Lee Venis and Robert Thompson of Crawfordsville; Donald Byers of Indianapolis Robert Barnett from Illinois; Merle Venis and Russell Venis. Flowerbearers were Mesdames Joyce Davis Jones, Daisy Davis, Alethia Murdock, Betty Venis, Carolyn Thompson, Barbara Byers and Zelma Dunnell of Danville, Ill. Burial was in the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.

He was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church, Montgomery Lodge No. 50, OES and Square Club. Survivors include his wife and father; a daughter, Mrs. Nancy C. Smith of Crawfordsville; a half-brother, Charles Fink of Carpentersville, Ill., and three grandchildren, Donald, Deanna and David Smith, all of Crawfordsville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Clarence Loveland in charge. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. He had been in failing health several months. Born July 11, 1882, in Waynetown, he was the son of James and Joan Underwood Blackford. He was twice married. His first marriage was to Pearl Kline, who preceded him in death. His second marriage was to Grace B. Smith. They were married here, Feb. 20, 1947. Mr. Blackford was a member of the Waynetown Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge. He graduated from Waynetown High School and Crawfordsville Business College. He was employed by the Ben Hur Life Assn. for 35 years. Survivors cinludre his wife; a stepdaughter, Ellen M. Rush of Crawfordsville; two stepgrandsons, James F. and Melvin A. Rush, both of Crawfordsville, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. (EST) Saturday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home with Rev. She had been a patient there since Sept. 25 when she fractured her hip here at the home of a sister, Mrs. Della Myer. She was born June 16, 1871, on a farm near Rossville, Ill., a daughter of Wesley and Margaret Crawford Blackford. Miss Blackford was a member of the Prairie Chapel Church near Rossville. She lived all her life near Rossville until she moved to her sister's home here four years ago. Her only survivors are her sister, two nieces and three nephews. The body was brought to Servies Funeral home here where services will be conducted Monday at 4 p.m. (CST) with Rev. Lewis Poore in charge. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday. After services here Monday, the body will be taken to Young Funeral Home at Rossville, Ill., where friends may call after 7 p.m. Funeral rites will be conducted there at 2 p.m. (EST) Tuesday. Burial will be in the Rossville Cemetery.

She worked on the old Graham Store here and had been employed the past 25 years at the Golden Rule Store. She was a member of the First Christian Church, BPW and Travel Study Club. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Antha Martin of Indianapolis and Miss Lena Carroll of Darlington and a nephew, Henry Carroll Martin of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by a brother, Orville Carroll. Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. (EST) Wednesday at Bright Funeral Home here with Rev. Paul E. Million officiating. Cable, 62, died in her sleep early Thursday morning in her home at 506 Kentucky St. She was born Nov. 3, 1897, in Montgomery County near Waynetown to Simon and Alberta Maxwell Peacock. In January, 1916, she married Logan Cable in Crawfordsville. He preceded her in death April 1, 1959. She is survived by her son, Fred Jones; three sisters, Mrs. Robert Galloway of near Waynetown, Mrs. Charles Wood of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Robert Wason of Indianapolis; three brothers, Eston and Raymond Peacock of Indianapolis and Dallas Peacock of Rockville, and by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by seven other brothers and sisters. Friends may call at the Bright Funeral Home after 2 p.m. EST Friday. Services will be conducted by Rev. Paul E. PHOEBE WERT DIES AT HOSPITAL- WAYNETOWN WOMAN'S DEATH IS CAUSED BY ABSCESS OF STOMACH- Mrs. Phoebe Wert, age 67, died yesterday morning at 3:30 o'clock at the Culver Union Hospital of an abscess of the stomach, which had caused her serious illness for the last four weeks. She underwent an operation Monday. Her home was in Waynetown. The deceased was born on January 28, 1855, near Wallace, where she spent practically all of her life. She was the daughter of Peter and Eliza Guntle Clodfelter. About forty-five years ago, she married Samuel Neese. Mr. Neese died thirty-nine years ago, and she married John Wert. Surviving are her two daughter, Mrs. Eva Moore, of Waynetown, and Mrs. Edith Williams, of Champaign, Ill.; one son, Ira Neese, of Waukesha, Wis.; one sister, Mrs. Susanna Sellee, of Hillsboro; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church in Waynetown Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with burial in the Masonic Cemetery. Rev. Clearwater will be in charge.

Hill, 85, Of Ladoga, Dies in Hospital- LADOGA- Cecil Alsie Hill, 85, died at 9:25 p.m. Monday in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville where he was admitted earlier in the day. He had been seriously ill two and one-half weeks. Mr. Hill, who observed his 85th birthday Sunday, was born Dec. 15, 1878 in Clark Township, Montgomery County, four and one-half miles southeast of Ladoga, son of Clifton G. and Hattie Hymer Hill. He was the youngest and last survivor of five children. He was married Dec. 2, 1903 to May Christie. They were married at Ladoga. Mr. Hill attended Ford No. 8 Grade School in Clark Township and was graduated from Ladoga High School in 1896. He attended DePauw University. He farmed his entire life and resided across the road from his birthplace. Survivors include the widow; a son, Carl L. of Ladoga; and a daughter, Mrs. Gladys L. Myers of Ladoga. He was preceded in death by a son, Glen L. The body was taken to Perkins Funeral Home at Roachdale. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Survivors include six children, Mrs. Herman Blum, Kenneth, Charles, Robert and Joe Grubb, all of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Jaunita Wade of Mooresville; a sister, Mrs. Ida Lauthers of Indianapolis, with whome Mrs. Grubb made her home; a foster son, Bill Coffman, and two nieces in this area, Mrs. William Bennett of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Francis Watson of Roachdale. A daughter and several brothers and sisters are deceased. Born March 14, 1894 in Montgomery County, she was a daughter of Irvin and Rosa McCormick Buchanan. She married Jesse Jones in 1913. They were married here. Surviving are a son, Harold M. Jones of Indianapolis; a daughter Mrs. Robert B. Swanson of Crawfordsville; a brother, Robert Buchanan of Crawfordsville; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Cooper and Mrs. Thelma Peffley, both of Crawfordsville; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son who lost his life during World War II. The son, Hubert Jones, was killed Feb. 12, 1945 while serving with the U.S. Army in Germany. Crawfordsville Journal Review, 18-Oct-1960, 2: 7- Lawrence Guinn Found Dead Near His Linden Home- LINDEN- Lawrence Guinn, 49, was found dead in a corn crib on the Lawrence DeVore farm Tuesday morning with a bullet wound in his chest. The sheriff's department reported the wound was believed to be self-inflicted. The body was found by Noel Coffman, a neighbor from whom Guinn's wife sought assistance when her husband did not return home at the usual time. Guinn was an employe on the night shift at a Lafayette industry. He left home about 6 p.m. Monday, presumably to go to work. His family was not alarmed at his absence because of his working hours. Mrs. Guinn sought the aid of the neighbor when her husband did not return at his usual house and she learned a .22 caliber rifle and shells were missing. The DeVore farm adjoins the property where Guinn and his family live. Guinn was born June 19, 1911, at Glasgow, Ky., the son of Samuel C. and Ida Glass Guinn. He was married Jan. 14, 1936, to Mary E. Norris in Glasgow. He had lived in the Linden community for the past 18 years and had been employed as a furnace operator at the Fairfield Manufacturing Co., in Lafayette. He was a member of the Siloam Baptist Church in Glasgow. He was also a member of the Eagles Lodge in Crawfordsville and had received a degree of "entered apprentice" in the Linden Masonic Lodge. The survivors include the wife; three daughters, Mrs. Delores McCormick, Rt. 6, Crawfordsville, and Linda and Shirley Guinn, both at home; two sons, Joseph and Phillip, both at home; a sister, Mrs. Elsie Blaydes of Akron, Ohio, and a number of nieces and nephews. A sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at the Helms Funeral Home in Linden, Thursday at 2 p.m. EST, with Rev. David Williams of the Linden New Testament Baptist Church in charge. Burial will be in the Linden Cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
