I'm like you, I've had a thousand different hobbies at some point in my life, but genealogy is something I never get tired of. Maybe it's because it's something we get to share- I know the Montgomery list has drawn me back in a couple of times when I've gone a month or 2 without doing any genealogy. Author: davesmith8633 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.montgomery/1228/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for additional information on Nancy (Bowman) Barber who was a daughter of George and Elizabeth (Airhart) Bowman born in Boone or Montgomery County around Nov of 1852. She married a John W. Barber Oct 25, 1877 in Boone County. Her husband is buried in the Stoner Cemetery near Ladoga but there does not appear to be a stone for her there. They had a daughter Lizzie who died (likely as an infant) before 1900 and one surviving daughter, Mary Alice, who married George Washington Alvord. Montgomery County death records indicate Nancy died on Sept. 30, 1902. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I love this line from the article: "As no trouble in the Valley is complete without some member of the Newlin family having a hand in it". I dated a Newlin (one of the Robinson clan) for a couple of years, but my dad and grandmother never told any Newlin stories! Melissa Robinson Jackson

The marriage was not a problem: Ancestry has the record. It shows the marriage of Bessie Lowery to Walter Newlin on 28 September 1911 in Montgomery County. It also gives birthdates for each: 3 Jan 1888 for Walter, and 29 Nov 1892 for Bessie. Then the 1920 census shows them as a married couple living, as you suggested in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. I did not find them in 1930, so the spelling may have been different. > > I looked for Bessie in 1910 and 1900. > > > > Home in 1900: possibly in Greenfield (Hancock Co) with Joseph and Luella, [Bessie], Goldie, and Eva. The trouble is, his surname is given as Loher - the copy looks like it, too. But a couple who might be his parents are next door, and their name is given as Lohek. The handwriting is neat, but this is a copy from the original notes. If you can find information about siblings, it might confirm this identification. The father, Joseph had 9, eight of whom were living in 1900. A Virginia accent might well have given an Indiana census-taker pause. I've seen worse distortions! 3. Here's a little tidbit about one C'ville Newlin family: >From Crawfordsville Indiana Journal Review Thursday, September 6, 1928 p1c5: "NEW FAMILY FEUD IN VALLEY RESULTS IN AFFIDAVIT RUSH Harrisons, Jeffries and Newlins Call in Police to Settle Dispute. The Section of Crawfordsville known as the Valley.. took on the appearance of the mountainous part of old Kentucky where a family feud is the biggest part of everybody's life. Wednesday evening and Thursday morning when more affidavits than you can shake a stick at were filed in the mayor's court by principals in the conflict. When the smoke of battle had cleared away the names of Mrs. Lue Harrison, Carl Jeffries, Sherman Jeffries, Ellen Newlin and John Newlin graced the files of the police court and the persons charged with disturbing the peace of the community were out on bond and ready for more action. To start with, Mrs. Lue Harrison called at police court and made an affidavit against Carl Jeffries charging assault and battery. When Mrs. Harrison disappeared, Sherman Jeffries, Carl's father, negotiated the stairs to the second floor of the city building and filed an affidavit against Mrs. Harrison in which he charged her with profanity. As no trouble in the Valley is complete without some member of the Newlin family having a hand in it, Mrs. Ellen Newlin apeared before Chief of Police Shields and when she couldn't think of anybody else to file an affidavit against, she decided to have her husband, John, charged with assault and battery. Police expected more affidavits to be filed by other residents of the city before the feud finally is ironed out." (For info: My interest is that Lue Harrison was my wife's grandmother.) ....Jack ----- Original Message ----- From: Karen Zach To: [email protected] ; [email protected] Sent: Friday, October 15, 2010 10:36 AM Subject: Re: [InMontgo] NEWLIN Marriage Record 5 p 108 Montgomery Co IN Marriages Groom: Walter P.
