A daughter of William J. and Alta M. Austin Cornell, she was born May 16, 1925, at Louisville. She was twice married, first to Dorman E. Wright. Her second marriage was to Lowell P. Underwood, who survives. She came to Montgomery County at an early age. Surviving besides the husband are two sons, Michael Earl Wright and David Allen Wright, and two daughters, Teresa Gail Wright and infant Sally Jo Connell, the latter born Nov. 15, all of Crawfordsville; the mother, Mrs. John W. Ferris of Lafayette; grandmother, Mrs. Agnes Austin of Mellott; four brothers, Dan and William Connell of Crawfordsville, Francis J. Connell of Bremen, Ga., and Sylvester J. Connell of Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs. DeVonna Wilson of Crawfordsville, and two half-sisters. Mrs. Connell was preceded in death by a brother and sister. Funeral services are announced for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bright Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul Hubble officiating and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

McClure, a life resident of Montgomery County, died at 10:40 p.m. Saturday of a heart ailment. She had been ill eight weeks and for several weeks was a patient in Culver Hopsital at Crawfordsville. A native of near Mace, Mrs. McClure was a daughter of Daniel and Jennie Heffner Beck. She married William Hess McClure at Wingate Dec. 23, 1945. For the last 51 years she had lived in New Richmond. She was a member of the Center Christian Church, Center Help Society, OES at New Richmond and the Loyal Workers Class of New Richmond. Survivors include a step daughter, Mrs. Edwin Flanigan of Crawfordsville; a stepson, Theron McClure of Crawfordsville; two sisters, Mrs. Dora Ingersoll of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Virgil Wilkinson of Waynetown; two brothers, John and Charles Beck of Waynetown; two step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. A sister is deceased. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Center Church, where the body will lie in state for an hour beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery south of the church. Rev. Frank Williams will officiate. Friends may call at the Helms Funeral Home in Linden after 2 p.m. Monday.

    3. Crawfordsville Journal Review 24-Dec-1963 2:4- Mrs. Mae Dowden Dies in Hospital; Services Friday- Mrs. Mae Dowden, 74, 803 E. Market St., died at noon Monday in Culver Hospital where she had been a patient since suffering a fall at her home about four weeks ago. She was born March 5, 1889 in Fountain County, a daughter of Julius and Olive Livengood Keller. She married Oliver B. Dowden March 5, 1905. They were married at Wallace. Mrs. Dowden had resided in this city the past 15 years. She was employed at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital at Lafayette for a period of time and for 14 years was a nurse and matron at the Lutheran Home in Mulberry. She was educated in Newtown school s and was a member of Wallace Ladies Aid. She also was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and Ladies Society of the church here. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. LaMoyne Utterback of Crawfordsville; a brother, Floyd Keller of new Wallace; a sister, Mrs. Estel Perigo of Wayentown; three granddaughters, Mrs. Ruth Hampton of New Market, Mrs. Kathryn Mitchell of Waynetown and Mrs. Marilee Cummings of Crawfordsville; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband. The body was taken to Servies Funeral Home at Waynetown where friends may pay their respects after 1 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Lutheran Church in Wallace with Rev. John Stacey officiating. Interment will be in Lutheran Cemetery there. Last Rites Conducted for Mrs. Mae Dowden- WAYNETOWN- Funeral services for Mrs. Mae Dowden were held in the Lutheran Church at Wallace Friday morning, Rev. Mr. Stacey officiated and piano music was played by Mrs. Hazel Stacey. Serving as pallbearers were Max Bond, Wilmer Bell, Max Myers, Russell Thompson, Howard Anderson and Don Perigo. Flower bearers were grandchildren- Lonetha Mitchell and Toni Mitchell- also Ronnie Bill Perigo, Johnny Perigo, Lorie Perigo, Becky Perigo, Randy Perigo, Charlotte Meadows, Olive Meadows, Sharon Jeffers, Helen Meadows, Virginia Runyon, Marietta Keller, Neva Dowden, Helen Dowden, Donis Dowden, Mary Lou Dowden, Lela Lea Dowden and Cerola Bond. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Green St., widow of Ray Barnett, Montgomery County farmer, died Saturday morning in Culver Hospital following an extended illness. Born May 15, 1884 in Tippecanoe County, Mrs. Barnett was the daughter of George and Emma Parvis. She married Mr. Barnett in 1906. Mrs. Barnett was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church and the Linden Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. The family home was in the Linden community several years. Survivors include a son, Max Barnett, teacher in the New Ross School; a daughter, Mrs. L. W. Smith of Lafayette; a brother, George Parvis of Stockwell, and a grandson, William Ray Barnett. Friends may call at the Hunt and Son Funeral Home, where services are announced for 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Clarence Loveland of Trinity Church officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Crawfordsville Journal Review 8-Jan-1960 7: 2- Minnie Barnett Dies In Hospital- WAYNETOWN- Mrs. Minnie Barnett, 69, died at 5:15 p.m. Saturday in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville after a year’s illness. She had been seriously ill three months and hospitalized five weeks. Born June 22, 1890, near here she was the daughter of W. Scott and Ellen Moore Switzer. She married Thomas A. Barnett July 30, 1913, in Crawfordsville. He died July 29, 1958. Mrs. Barnett was a member of the Waynetown Baptist Church. She attended Sand Bank and Waynetown schools and lived all of her life in the Waynetown vicinity. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Poynter of Bloomingdale and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Services Funeral Home here with Rev. John Cassidy of Westport officiating, assisted by Rev. Homer M. Cole, pastor of the Waynetown Christina church. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Wayne. He had made his home with his daughter the past year. Born April 12, 1877, in Boone County near Shannondale, he was a son of Henry and Elizabeth Cox. He was twice married. His first marriage was to Clara Moore. She died April 26, 1945. His second marriage was to Maude Powers. She died Dec. 1, 1958. Mr. Cox was a retired farmer. He farmed in the Linden and Waynetown areas a number of years. He was a member of the Shannondale Presbyterian Church. Survivors, in addition to Mrs. Libey, are another daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Barnett of Springfield, Ohio; a stepson, Earl Powers of Crawfordsville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters and brother. Funeral rites are announced for 2 p.m. Friday at Bright Funeral Home with Rev. John R. Services in charge. She was born in Montgomery County to Alva and Susie Gooding Parish. She was reared by her grandmother, Mrs. Mandy Gooding, and her aunt, Mrs. Zula Gaines, near Wallace. She attended Wallace School and was graduated in 1915. She was first married to the late Gilbert Hixon of Brazil. She married Sheridan Chambers in 1928. She was a member of the United Brethren Church at Brazil and worked as a designer and seamstress in Brazil for many years. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Chambers; a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Grider; two grandchildren at Wilmington, Ill., and two brothers, Terrence Parish of near Wesley and Flora Parish of Michigan. Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. EST at the Lawson Funeral Home in Brazil. Burial will be at Brazil.

Crawfordsville Journal Review 6-Aug-1960 4: 4- John McCabe Dead At 73- Founder Of Annual “Hoss Picnic” Here- John Albert McCabe, 73, founder of the annual McCabe Hoss Picnic, died at 3:40 p.m. Friday in Culver Hospital, where he had been a patient since June 26. Mr. McCabe had a saddle horse farm southwest of the city for the last 30 years. The Hoss Picnic, attracting competitors from a wide area, was conducted each year on or near his birthday anniversary. He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and of the Athens and Bainbridge Saddle Clubs. A native of Putnam County, he was born Sept. 25, 1886 to John B. and Julia Hannalin McCabe. He was married to Nell Flannigan, who died in 1944. He attended Putnam County schools and Purdue University. Surviving are three brothers, Frank L., of Houston, Tex., James of Los Angeles and Harry of Greencastle; two sisters, Miss Marguerite McCabe of Joliet, Ill., and Mrs. Lucille Schlatter of Whiting, and an uncle and two aunts. Services are announced for 9 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard’s Church with Rev. Henry Ward celebrant of the Mass. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery at Greencastle. Dickerson, 59, died suddenly Thursday morning at his home on Rt. 6, Crawfordsville, five miles north on U. S. 231. He was born May 5, 1901, in Barrien County, Ky., near Tompkinsville, the son of Isaac and Ida Turner Dickerson. He was first married to Vivian Petyon and following her death he was married to Gladys Francis Oct. 14, 1931, in Danville, Ky. When he was young his family moved to Monroe County, Ky., and he attended schools there until moving to Montgomery County. He had been an electrician in Crawfordsville and had lived in Crawfordsville and Mace communities. He worked for R. R. Donnelley & Sons for 13 years and during World War II did electrical work for the government. He had lived at his present home for 15 years. He was a member of Youngs Chapel Christian Church, a deacon and a member of the board of trustees. Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert of Montezuma; a daughter, Mrs. Margurie Lloyd of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, Paul of Rt. 2 and Wallace of Crawfordsville; three sisters, Mrs. Tessie Hodge of Hudson, Ill., Mrs. Troas Combs of Owensboro, Ky., and Mrs. Ruth Spradlin of Rt. 2; five grandchildren; an uncle; three aunts, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mae. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bright Funeral Home here with Rev. Linn, 90, died Monday at 8:15 p.m. (EST) at the Pleasant Acres Nursing Home near McCordsville. He had been a patient there for 15 months. Born Nov. 28, 1869, at Linnsburg, he was the son of Martha and Asbury Linn. He married Mary E. Lee, who preceded him in death in 1945. The deceased worked for the New York Central Railroad as a telegrapher and station agent, and was a grocer in Mace and Linnsburg. From 1950 to 1959 he lived in Long Beach, Calif., with his son, Rex. He was a member of the Mace Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Muriel Jarvis of Indianapolis; a son, Rex L. Lin of Long Beach; a brother, Everett Linn of Mace; a sister, Mrs. Fern Chambers of Linnsburg; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death, besides his wife, were a son, Lewis, a brother, Charles, and a sister, Mrs. Grace Peck. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. (EST) Friday at Bright Funeral Home with Rev.     3. Sept. 6, 1960 (source unknown) - Former County Resident Dies- LAFAYETTE- Lester M. Rafferty, 61, died at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday in Methodist Hospital at Rochester, Minn., after a two-week illness. He underwent surgery a week ago. Mr. Rafferty was born Sept. 10, 1898 and lived in the New Richmond and Linden Communities before moving here 15 years ago. He was married to Velva L. McCormick. He was a graduate of the Wingate schools and had been employed by Purdue University the past three years. Prior to that he was a guard at Michigan City and Putnamville State Prisons and worked one year t the Alcoa Aluminum plant here during World War II. Mr. Rafferty was a member of the Elmdale Church and was a 15-year member of the New Richmond F&AM Lodge. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Leland C. of Crawfordsville; Charles L. of Auburn, N. Y. and Lester Rafferty Jr. of Lafayette; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Brandlein of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Brenna and Mrs. Paul Hardin, both of Crawfordsville; three brothers, Leslie A. of Logansport, Clarence of Crawfordsville and Kenneth Rafferty of Waveland and two grandsons. They body will be brought to the Hippensteel Funeral Home here. Funeral arrangements are pending.

She had been in failing health several years. For 40 years she lived two miles east of Ladoga. A native of New Ross, she was born April 13, 1881 to James William and Sarah Jane Powell. She married Charles Richards Sparks in Lebanon Dec. 31, 1901. He died in August 1952. Mrs. Sparks was a member of the New Ross Christian Church. She was reared in Lebanon and came to the New Ross-Ladoga area after her marriage. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Juanita French of New Ross and Mrs. Dolly Cathryn Trosper of Lebanon; four sons, Charles Richard Jr. and William Bruce Sparks of Ladoga and Darrel David and Adrian B. Sparks of Crawfordsville; a brother, Jesse Powell of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Born in a log cabin south of Crawfordsville Dec. 9, 1882, Mr. Wilkinson was the son of Pascal and America Wilkinson. He was married to Laura B. Mason, who died in November o f 1950. He attended Montgomery County schools and was a farmer in the Linden area and north of Crawfordsville. Mr. Wilkinson was a member of Youngs Chapel Christian Church. He had made his home the past few years with a nephew, William G. Reed, on the old family farm. Surviving is a brother of Ceres, Calif. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Bright Funeral Home with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Rev. John R. Servies will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday.

He had been in failing health six months and seriously ill a week. Mr. Gentry served as a Montgomery County deputy sheriff for years. He was employed a number of years by Cleveland Bakery at Crawfordsville and later owned and operated a bakery at Wingate. He moved to this community in 1942 and operated a Shell service station here. After his retirement in 1955, he moved to a farm three miles northeast of Veedersburg. He was a member of the Baptist Church here. Born Nov. 9, 1903 near New Market, he was the son of George and Martha Reeves Gentry. He was a 1922 graduate of Crawfordsville High School and attended Wabash College. He was married Oct. 9, 1929 to Beatrice Quick. They were married at Wingate. Survivors include the widow; a son, James, a student at Indiana University and a teacher at Bloomington; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Jimmy Gentry, both of Bloomington; a sister, Mrs. Evah Strank of Crawfordsville, and a number of cousins. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha, who died in 1959. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Servies Funeral Home here with Rev. Gary Allbritten of Peru officiating. She had been a patient there since Friday. Death was attributed to a stroke. Mrs. Shannon was born April 17, 1902, the daughter of Charles and Leona Bible White. She was married July 27, 1924, to Martin Shannon. Mrs. Shannon belonged to the Order of Eastern Star and was a past matron of that organization. She was a member of the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church. She was formerly employed at Fredman’s Clothing Store, now Rapp’s and worked for sometime in the office at Culver Hospital. She was a 1921 graduate of Crawfordsville High School. Survivors, in addition to the husband, include two daughters, Mrs. Edward Butler of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Robert Keeling of Lebanon, and four grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Shannon will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home with Rev. John G. DeKruyter officiating. Burial will be in Shannondale Cemetery. Richland Ave., Indianapolis, a son of former Waynetown residents. He was employed at the Union Stockyards. Surviving are the mother, Mrs. Gertrude Buckley Higbee of Indianapolis; two sons in the armed forces, David Lee and Danny Higbee, and a grandson. Mr. Higbee’s father, Fred Higbee, is deceased. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at the Farley Funeral Home, 1604 W. Morris, Indianapolis.
