Jonathan Lindley, a 20-year-old George Washington University student, came to Paoli in order to be present for the dedication of a monument of his great great great grandfather, Jonathan Lindley who was identified as the founder of Paoli and one of the founders of Indiana University. The elder Lindley was appointed by the Indiana Constitutional Convention of 1816 as chairman of the committee that selected the Indiana township from which proceeds from land sales went to support Indiana Seminary, forerunner of IU. He also was appointed to serve on the infant institution's first board of trustees.
