Faculty 15 Years: Funeral Services at The University The University community and citizens generally were shocked by the news received late Saturday that Dr. H. G. Childs, a member of the University faculty for the past 15 years, had died at the Long hospital in Indianapolis. He had been in ill health for some two years and had undergone one or two operations. The body was brought to the Allen funeral home where it remained until this morning. A brief service conducted by President Bryan at the Student Building auditorium at 10 o'clock this morning marked the final tribute of the students and faculty of Indiana University to their teacher and associate. From Bloomington the body of Dr. Childs was taken to Stillwater, Min., for burial. Mrs. Lottie Kirby accompanied Mrs. Childs in behalf of the University. Hubert Guy Childs was born in Mankata, Minnesota, December 14, 1872, and died at Indianapolis, June 23, 1928 aged 56. His boyhood days were spent at Mapleton, Minn., where he was graduated from hjgh school. In 1897, he was granted the B. S. degree by the University of Minnesota, and in 1911, he received the Master's degree from Leland Stanford university, and in 1918, the Doctor's degree from Columbia. In 1901 he was married to Laura Goff, at Wheaton, Minn., who survives him. The life of Dr. Childs is a record of labor and devotion to the cause of public education, a cause in which he achieved eminent success. Forced by illness to retire from active service as a member of the faculty of the Indiana University school of education two years ago, Dr. Childs continued to devote his energies to individual study and research, and to counsel and encouragement to those with whom he was associated. Following a period of service as superintendent of schools at Good Thunder, Wheaton, Slayton, and Medella, Minn., Dr. Childs became a member of the faculty of the University of Montana. From the Brooklyn Training School for teachers where he was professor of psychology, he came to Indiana University in 1913. Since that time he has been a member of the faculty of the school of education as professor of secondary education and director of supervised teaching. In addition to these duties, Dr. Childs has, for several years, served as chairman of the Indiana state committee on the commission of secondary schools of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary schools. Dr. Childs was affiliated with the Presbyterian church, was a Mason, and held membership in the National Educational Association, the national society for the study of education and in Phi Delta Kappa, national honorary educational fraternity.
