Smithville (Monroe County, Indiana) News, April 2, 1909, p. 2. HORRIBLE ACCIDENT AT OOLITIC QUARRY This morning about ten o'clock, while the stone train was setting some cars at the quarry, Dick (consider Richard a spelling variant) Chandler was working beside the track at the end of a car when the engine suddenly struck the car pushing it forward, hemming him in between the car and coal shed where he was crushed to death. Dr. Jackson of this place, and Dr. Edward Harris of Bloomington, were hurriedly summoned, but life was extinct before they reached the quarry. Mr. Chandler resided at Sanders, he leaves a wife and four children. He was hurt once before at the same quarry.
