The original was accompanied by six photographs. In the summer of 1989, Bob and Doris Fox of Bloomington, Indiana, lost their son, Tom, to AIDS. Shortly after Tom's obituary was published, the Foxes were contacted by Dennis Hill and Vela Harrison and asked to help launch a Bloomington chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. They agreed. The first meeting was held in 1992 and since that time Doris served as the group's president for nearly 20 years. Now in their mid-80s, Bob and Doris have received numerous awards for their work.
