Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Star, February 2, 1935, p. 1. FARM HOUSE RAZED BY EXPLOSION, FIRE Children Rescued, Possessions Destroyed Monroe County's third disastrous fire in as many weeks occurred Thursday when the five-room house on the T. J. Sare farm south of Bloomington, occupied by Walter Hetrick (consider Hedrick a spelling variant) and family, was completely destroyed by fire following a stove explosion. Hetrick rescued his two daughters and four sons, but was unable to save any household furnishings or personal possession. Mrs. Hetrick was in Bloomington shopping. The blaze started after Hetrick had poured coal oil on the stove fire. A slight explosion occurred but no damage was discovered. Shortly afterward, Sam Jacobs, caretaker of the farm, who lives a short distance from the Hetrick home, discovered the attic of the Hetrick residence in flames and sounded a warning. The house, which was completely gutted, was valued at about $3,000 and was fully insured. Hetrick's personal possessions, household furnishings and food was not insured.
