NOTE: The information noted below was abstracted by Randi Richardson from a document in a civil court record, Box 326, located at the Monroe County History Center, Bloomington, Indiana. George Leach, age 9, was born to Enoch and Jane Leach on October 21, 1868. At the time the record was made, his father was living in Kentucky and his mother was deceased. He had a half sister, Nancy, who lived in Bloomington. George reportedly had been involved in some small thefts. Consequently, he was sent to the House of Refuge (later known at the Boys' School) in Plainfield, Indiana, a facility for the "reformation and correction of juvenile offenders."
