    1. [INMONROE] Showers Furniture Factory Considered Leaving Bloomington Because of Water Shortage & Other Issues
    2. Constance Shotts
    3. Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Weekly Star, March 11, 1924, p. 1. CITY MUST GUARANTEE WATER AT ONCE OR LOSE GREATEST INDUSTRY Stockholders Met This Morning And Took Drastic Action. Bloomington now seems to be at the parting of the ways with its greatest industry, The Showers furniture factory. This mammoth institution-the envy of other cities-will be moved away unless an adequate water supply is guaranteed without further delay. At a meeting of stockholders this morning which lasted from 10 o'clock until noon, a resolution was unanimously passed recommending to the officers of the company that unless an adequate supply of water is guaranteed at once, that a policy of restriction of output in Bloomington be adopted and that the company begin the expansion of its plant in other cities. This means that within five years the big factory would be gone. Louisville is hot after it and has offered wonderful inducements in the way of an abundance of water, excellent factory site, adequate housing facilities, low taxes, and plenty of labor-the very things that are lacking here. The shortage of the labor market here has always been a great drawback to the company because it has had to bring in laborers from outside for whom there were no houses. Moreover, the company has had to compete with local stone quarries in the matter of wages which has resulted in a higher wage scale being paid here than at any other furniture center in the United States. It is a well known fact that the Showers company has been compelled to pay 10 cents per hour more than is paid the same kind of labor in the great furniture factories of Grand Rapids, Jamestown, N. Y.; Evansville and Shelbyville. During the water shortage in this city two years ago the Showers company was put to an expense of $300 a day for water, compelling it to almost stop production and devote its energies to getting water. Another drawback of having the factory here is the company's terrific tax burden by reason of Bloomington's high tax rate. The Monon railroad company and the Showers factory are by far the heaviest tax payers in the county. With other cities bidding for this great concern, is Bloomington going to sit idly by and allow it to get away for no other reason than that we have been quarreling over water for the past 20 years? It is time for the debate to end and for dirt to fly on construction. Constance T. William Pate, Clarence Minnicks and John Smiley were arraigned before Judge Rundell this morning on a charge of auto stealing and were sentenced to 180 days on the state farm to which was added a $100 fine in each case. Ninety of the 180 days were suspended by Judge Rundell. The three young men were charged with taking a Chevrolet touring car belonging to Henry Blair from in front of the Church of Christ on Sunday, March 2. They were arrested with the car at Union, Missouri. A plea for leniency was made after Judge Rundell had sentenced the young men. After sentence was passed, the boys were taken back to the jail in the custody of Sheriff Peterson. They will be taken to the state penal farm at Putnamville within the next five days, Sheriff Peterson said. They probably will not be taken right away because of the condition of the roads. A large crowd attended the hearing. The boys had previously plead guilty, and had only to receive their sentences this morning. They had been confined in the local jail for almost a week.
