Bloomington (Monroe County, Indiana) Telephone, October 13, 1893, p. 4. Matters in Court. Much of the time of the circuit court this week will be occupied by the case of Emanuel Rothschild, of Bedford, now on trial. It is a criminal prosecution, and the charge is for arson. He is a clothing merchant at Bedford, and a few weeks ago, one night about 11 o'clock, fire was discovered in his store room. By prompt action of the fire department, the flames were soon extinguished, and it is said there will be evidence to show that the clothing and articles about were saturated with coal oil; and that Rothschild was seen to leave the store only a short time before. Upon this evidence it is charged that he fired the stock, the motive being to get a heavy insurance that was on the goods. On the other hand Rothschild claims that he knows nothing about the cause of the fire and that he is innocent of the charge. There are about 70 witnesses in all, including many of the leading business men of Bedford. John R. East and Cook & Owens are defending, and John E. Edmondson, as prosecutor, represents the State, assisted by Moses F. Dunn and S. B. Lowe. Constance T.
