Murdered Woman Brought To This City for Burial Remains of Laura McMahon, Killed by Common Law Companion at Vincennes, in Fit of Jealously, To Be Placed in Local Cemetery. Woman's Death Came As Climax to Varied Career-Had Four Husbands at Different Times. Three of Them Bloomington Men. This afternoon Mrs. Laura McMahan, victim of a shooting tragedy at her home in Vincennes by her jealous common-law companion, was buried at Rose Hill. The body arrived yesterday evening and the funeral was from the home of the brother Deffern Hacker. A small number of friends attended as the dead woman had been a resident of Bloomington for a time. The services were in charge of Rev. Hacker. Mrs. McMahan was aged 36. Here is the story of the tragedy as told by a Vincennes dispatch: "Be sure your sins will find you out. That is the story of the death and finding of the body of Laura McMahon, aged 36, formerly of Bloomington, who has resided here for a few months. A little girl playing in the back yard made the discovery and the evidence is that the woman has been the common law wife of Dover Brown. The two had had a quarrel and Brown had drawn a revolver from under the pillow and shot Mrs. McMahon through the neck, and is now in a critical condition from slashing himself with a razor to end his own life. Physicians say he will live, however, and a first degree murder charge will be placed against him. "According to police, the couple had been living together for about four months as man and wife. During the last month, however, Mrs. McMahon had been getting love letters from Orville Moore at Indianapolis, whom police say lived with Mrs. McMahon there for some time. "The latest of the letters, which was in the possession of police, intimated that Mrs. McMahon was to have left for Indianapolis at noon Sunday to join Moore. Brown is said to have learned something regarding her plans Friday night, and stayed at home Saturday, because of suspicion. "The shooting occurred about midnight Saturday. Brown supposedly pulling a pistol from beneath his pillow, as both lay in bed, and shot her. She arose and staggered into the yard and fell. He presumably picked up a razor and slashed his own throat and fell back on the bed. He was found there by police a short time after the discovery of Mrs. McMahon's body in an unconscious condition, weak from loss of blood." "Police said that Mrs. McMahon had been married four times, and divorced thrice. They are now trying to locate her relatives. "Charges will be filed against Brown as soon as he is able to leave the hospital. "Mrs. McMahon's husbands were, No. 2, a Mr. Leach of Bloomington; No. 3, Virgil Graham of Bloomington; No. 1, Jimmy Branon [sic] of Bloomington, No. 4, Otis McMahon, said to be living in Indianapolis."

    1. [INMONROE] National Cathedral at Washington, D. C. Constructed with Indiana Limestone; Architects & Stone Men Visited Quarry District for Stone

    3. Bloomington (Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana) Evening World, July15, 1910, p. 1. BIG STONE CONTRACT MAY BE LANDED Greatest Church in World To Be Built of Indiana Stone. EXPERTS AND ARCHITECTS HERE A party of prominent architects and stone men from Washington, D. C., were in Bloomington today visiting the quarry district. They are interested in the construction of the proposed National Cathedral at Washington, a $5,000,000 house of worship. The party was at Bedford all of Thursday. The contract for a portion of the church is to be let soon and it is supposed that the present visit of these experts is for the purpose of examining and inspecting Oolitic stone, it being understood that the Henley company and perhaps others in Bloomington will bid on the job, which will be a big one, although only one section of the church is to be built at his time. The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, which is to be built on St. Alban Heights, Washington City, is the result of effort and vision of Bishop Satterlee, and is some times referred to as the National Cathedral, because it is national in scope. It will be built of Indiana stone, and when completed, which may not be for years, it will probably be the finest church edifice in the United States and it is estimated that it will cost in the neighborhood of $5,000,000.
