William Spaulding "not Guilty" William Spaulding, the well known old colored man, has been acquitted of the murder of David White on the grounds of self defense. The case was first tried Monday and Tuesday, but as the jury could not agree, Judge Giles discharged it and ordered another trial at once. The case was called up a second time Thursday morning and by 6:30 a verdict of acquittal for Spaulding was a part of the record of the court. The evidence was much the same as already outlined, and the instructions of the court were read about 4:30. The jury retired to their room, appointed W. B. Baker foreman, and in 2 hours had a verdict of "not guilty" ready. The defense was strictly confined to a self defense, showing that White had gone to Spaulding's house, called him out and cut him with a knife. Then Spaulding attacked White, cutting his throat, resulting in death. The jury voted unanimous for acquittal on the first ballot.

    1. [INMONROE] Grant Wantland Acquitted of Charge of Criminal Assault on Mrs. Martha Chandler
    2. Constance Shotts via
    3. Bloomington (Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana) Telephone, November 13, 1896, p. 4. Grant Wantland on Trial. Grant Wantland was placed on trial this morning for attempted criminal assault on Mrs. Martha Chandler, a lady residing in the vicinity of South Park. The jury is made up of the regular panel with one or two exceptions. East & Fulk are attorneys for Wantland and J. E. Edmondson is conducting the prosecution. The crime occurred last August and created a great deal of excitement. Mrs. Chandler is a respectable widow lady and supports herself and children by working about the neighborhood. Mrs. Chandler had gotten up early in the morning to assist a neighbor lady, who was going south on the the [sic] early train. After doing this she returned to her home to find a man standing in her pathway near her door. He would not let her pass and made an attempt to assault her, tearing off a part of her clothing. Her screams frightened the man and he made away in the darkness. Mrs. Chandler claimed that she recognized the man as Grant Wantland and on her evidence he was arrested and later indicted by the grand jury. Wantland had been released from the penitentiary only a few months. He was sent to prison on a charge of stealing pole-cat hides from Thomas King. His attorneys appealed his case to the supreme court, which reversed the decision and granted him a new trial. The jury in the case against Grant Wantland, for attempted criminal assault on Mrs. Martha Chandler, brought in a verdict last night for the acquiting [sic] of Wantland. The evidence on both sides was very weak and an alibi was established by the defense.

    3. Bloomington (Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana) Telephone, November 13, 1896, p. 4. GLAD HE'S ALIVE. Harry Aiken Makes a Remarkable Escape from Death. Harry Aiken is glad to be alive today when he thinks of how many men have been killed outright with half the opportunity that he had yesterday afternoon. Mr. Aiken is a member of the firm of Hinds & Aiken that is now operating the well known planning mill on the Monon just south of town. He was at work as usual about the mill, and was wearing a cut-away coat. As he passed a line shaft the end of his coat caught in a screw head and in an instant Mr. Aiken was being thrown about the fast revolving shaft, which is about 18 inches clear of the ground. The fact that there were witnesses of the accident doubtless saved his life, as they stopped the machinery and hurried to his assistance. Mr. Aiken's coat, vest and shirt were torn from his body in the meantime, and the miracle is that his body was not mangled. He was at once moved to his home on east 3rd street and Dr. Lowder summoned. It was found upon examination that the right shoulder was dislocated and there were a number of painful bruises about the body. None of the injuries are regarded as serious and Mr. Aiken is resting nicely today.
