When I was working on the 1870 Martin Census Index, I noticed that Mitcheltree is spelled various ways in various places: Mitcheltree, Mitchelltree, Mitchell Tree, etc. I put out essentially the same message as the one you sent, and received several replies, all of which indicated that the township name was originally taken from a surname "Mitcheltree." I do not know if this is the same 'George Mitcheltree' that you mention. You might wish to look in "History of Martin County" by Harry Q. Holt, if you can find a copy. There are doubtless copies in the library in Shoals, Martin Co. IN and also e.g. in Washington, Daviess Co. IN. Here are some phone and address data: Loogootee Public Library (812) 295-3713 410 N Line St. Loogootee, IN 47553 Shoals Public Library (812) 247-3838 PO Box 909 Shoals, IN 47581 Winklepleck Public Library (812) 636-4949 202 W. Main St. Odon, Indiana 47562 Washington Library "Carnegie Public Library" (812) 254-4586 300 W Main St Washington, IN 47501 The latter two are in Daviess County. I have always found the personnel at these libraries to be wonderfully helpful. John Ragle
