I'm interested in knowing when either Loogootee or Shoals High School in Martin County began. I'm thinking it may have organized and begun accepting students in the 1890s or shortly thereafter. There may be an entry about this in Holt's Martin County history. Does anybody out there know?

    2. Marilyn Conlon
    3. Does anyone else have information on Jeremiah Raney and Mary Joan (Sheehan Moore) Raney who are buried in St. Rose Cemetary in Martin Co, IN? Anyone know who their parents were? Need date of death on both of them also. Thanks. In the National Archives in Washington DC, Jeremiah Riney is listed with his famiy in the 1810 Census in KY. In the 1820 Census and 1830 Census they are in (Martin Co) IN and the spelling is Raney. I can send a copy of the National Archives info if anyone wants it. There are other Raney's and Riney's in those three census. Has anyone found him in 1790 or 1800 Census? Maybe in another household??? 1790 MD census was very difficult to read, but I didn't see him there. According to the ages that they gave in these three census', he and his wife Mary Joan Sheehan Moore Raney, were born between 1765 and 1770. A little young to be a participant, (but anything is possible. I would be very proud if he were a Rev Soldier.) I have been told that there is a Jeremiah Raney Rainey? Riney? buried in New York. In the National Archives Rev Soldier records, "R" roll there is a Jeremiah Rainey and one other spelling for him (have to look for that). This Jeremiah served in the NY 5th Regiment. Jeremiah's stone in St. Rose Cemetary in Martin Co, Indiana was dedicated as a Revolutionary soldier around 1930, but that line was closed as it could not be substantiated. While we are on the Raney's, I have been told that his son, James Virgil Raney served in the Mexican War and was a recruiter in the Civil War. Can anyone substantiate this? I keep looking for him in any military records, that I come across. James Virgil Raney b.4-4-1809 Wash.Co.Ky to Martin Co, IN age 9, 1818. Both bur St Rose, Martin Co d.9-21-1881. m. Mary Helen (Holland), b. Galway Co. Clare, Ire. b.7-22-1820 d.4-22-1891 m.10-15-1839 Daviess Co, IN Children:1)Frank 2)Jeremiah 3)Mary 4)Johanna Raney Gootee 5)John Allen 6)Alexander 7)Thomas 8,9)unnamed twins James Virgil Raney's were my gg grandparents and John Allen Raney's were my great grandparents. I took pictures of John and Martha Raney's tombstone in Whitfield, IN in November. Hope to get back there this summer and go to St. Rose Cemetary and see Jeremiah and James Raney stones and do more research. Anyone have copies of birth, marriage or death certificates for any of these folks? Thank you. Marilyn (Sause) Conlon Raney, Sause, Conlon, McCord, Carrico, Johnson, Bradley, O'Connor, Downey

Armstead Baker was brother to my husband's gt. gt. grandfather. Armstaed was the son of Nicholas Baker & Lucy Lampkin. Nicholas was a Rev. Soldier and died in Lawrence Co. IN. I know the father of John Gregory Hall, but I don't know his mother. A friend of mine is a descendant of John G., and we have been all over Ky. a hundred times trying to find his mother. Here is what I have on Michael Hall, father of John G. Martin Co. Probate Records: File Box 52 Will Book A, page 45 - Written: 26 Sept 1851. Probated: 15 Mar 1856. To wife Ann Hall ( This is 2nd wife) Sons: Thomas Hall & John Gregory Hall - land in Perry Twp. WIT: J. F. Raney, Benedict Padgett, & JohnGootee. Michael R. Hall & Mrs. Nancy O'Neil were married in Martin Co. 1 Apr 1837. 1850 census - Perry Twp. Martin Co. # 57 Michael Hall, 81, MD Nancy, 70, MD William Davis, 10, IN Milton Davis, 13, IN James Davis, 7, IN The Davis children are Nancy Hall's grandchildren. I don't know a whole lot about the Mitchells. I have never worked on them. I did find where John G. Hall was guardian of David & Levi Mitchell, sons of Robert Mitchell, deceased in 1866. This may be a brother to Mary Mitchell. There was a Robert Mitchell taht left a Will in Lawrence, 1845. This may be Mary's father. 3. Posted on: Martin Co. In Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Martin/97 Surname: Hall, Mitchell, Baker ------------------------- Laura, I`m also researching these lines. I have some info on John Gregory Hall. He was my 3rd great grandfather. His father was Michael Raleigh Hall that was born in MD. in 1769. I don`t know what county. His mother was Susannah ____. John went by his middle name Gregory as did his son and grandson who were also named John. He was a Baptist preacher. Rumor has it that he 1st went to a seminary to become a priest. His father was Catholic. There are 3 generations of Halls buried at the Indian Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawrence Co. IN. The Halls lived around the Silverville area. They crossed the Martin and Lawrence Co. lines. Gregory`s 1st wife was Mary Elizabeth Hedrick. His 2nd wife was Mary Mitchell. Gregory maried Mary Apr. 16, 1829 in Lawrence Co. IN. He was born Feb. 28, 1807 in Woodford Co. KY. Around the Lexington area. He died Mar. 14, 1881 in Lawrence Co. IN. He was also a farmer. He had 9 children that I know of. Richard Waldo b. 4-19-1829; James B. b. 8-5-1830 d. 10-28-1884, Thomas Quilla b 6-2-1832, Sarah Jane (Sallie) b 3-14-1834, Mary Ann (Polly) b. 2-9-1836, Francis Marion b. 2-25-1838, Susannah b. 12-19-1839, John David b7-11-1844, d. 7-29-1917, Jocie b. 4-8-1847. There were a lot of marriages between the Hall and Baker line. There is a book on Mitchells at the Lawrence Co. IN Courthouse. It is not my Mitchells. But it could be your line. There is also a Baker book there which is your line. There are alot of those Bakers buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at the Crane Ammunitions Depot. It is open to the public on Memorial Day and the Sunday before. Other times it is open by special request. This cemetery is in a restricted area. You will be escorted there and escorted out. This cemetery is by a bunker. They have a book on every cemetery in the there. Rumor has it that the Halls migrated with the Catholic migration to KY; then on into IN. Nicholaus Baker was the father to Armstead and is buried at Silverville, Lawrence Co. IN. If I can be of further help to you let me know. Sue
