    2. I am looking for information about Mrs. Elva Olive (Stewart) Steward, died Nov 1968. My great-grandmother Olive Katherine Stewart (born 1876 in Shoals) had some relationship, as her daughter received a copy of the local obituary. Descendant surnames in the area from the obit are Gootee, Romick, and Stewart. Thanks in advance

    1. [INMARTIN] Re: James Sharpless
    2. James Sharples was born in Whittle Le Woods, Lancashire, England in February 1816. He emigrated from England with his mother, Alice Whalley Sharples, and several other children, in 1831. They joined his father, David Sharples, in Wellsburg, (W) VA. They moved to Coshocton Co., OH about 1835. James married a lady named Nacky? in Ohio, and moved to Martin Co., IN some time between the births of David and Absolom in 1845 and 1847, respectively. James' sister, Ellen Sharples Manley, my gg grandmother, and her family arrived in Martin Co. in 1848 from England.

    1. [INMARTIN] MILLER/ANDIS
    2. Lindsay Clark
    3. I am still trying to find out information about my Elizabeth Miller family. My Elizabeth was born in 1829 according to census records in Indiana - don't know town or county yet. I do know that her parents according to the 1880 census were both born in Virginia. Don't know how accurate that is though. Does anyone in Martin county have a Miller they are researching that their parents were both born in Virginia. I know that in 1850 census records my Elizabeth was married to James Andis and living in Brown Township, Martin County, Indiana. In the 1860 census she was living with her husband James and living in McCameron Township, Martin County, Indiana. In 1879 Elizabeth married Stephan Fields and minister and they were living in Daviess County, Indiana. He died in 1883 in Edwardsport, Indiana. I haven't been able to determine where and when Elizabeth died. If anyone has any information I would love to hear from you. Thanks Lindsay

    1. [INMARTIN] Thomas Evans
    2. Jolene Huddleston
    3. The family of Thomas and Elizabeth Evans along with Elizabeth's parents, Joel and Elizabeth Halbert, were in Martin county by 1820. According to the will of Thomas Evans at least 1000 acres of land was owned by Thomas and Elizabeth. Is there any way to know if this land was some sort of government grant? I was once told that, but no proof. I do not know the parentage of Thomas, but have felt that another resident of Martin county, Hugh Evans, might have been a brother. If anyone knows about this family I would like to hear from them. I know quite a bit about my Vandever and Halbert lines, but the Evans is a mystery. Jolene Vandever Huddleston

Dear Mr. Lane, I beleive the parents of Fariba Withcher were Edgar Witcher & Mary Smith that were married in Martin Co. IN. 6-6-1847. Evidently Mary Smith Witcher died before 2-28-1861, because that is when Edgar Witcher married Eliza Jane Perry. According to the 1860 census of Columbia Twp. Feriba and her brother & sister are living with Josephus & Mary A. Smith. 1860 census - Columbia Twp. Martin Co. IN # 1211 Josephus Smith, 36, NC Mary A. 27, IN Feraba Witcher, 6, IN Rufus Witcher, 10, IN Isabelle Witcher, 9, IN. 1850 census - Perry Twp. Martin Co. IN. #270 Edgar Witcher, 26, IN Mary, 22, IN Rufus, 2, IN Sarah Ann, 10 months, IN. Edgar Witcher is buried in Reilly Cemetery with his 2nd. wife. Edgar Witcher, 1824 - 1878 Eliza J. Witcher, 1838 - 1919. Edgar Witcher served in Co. K, 143rd. Regt. Ind. Vol. INF. Civil War. Eliza Jane Perry Witcher drew a Civil War Pension for herself anf her three children by Edgar Witcher. Her children were: Arthur Witcher, b. 23 June 1868, Josephine Witcher, b. 2 Mar 1872 and Edgar Witcher, b. 2 Mar 1874. Brice Witcher may be the father of Edgar Witcher. He is the only Witcher in Martin Co., per 1830 census. I found someplace on the computer where a Brice Witcher was b. 1790 in Grainger Co. TN. It said he was son of John Witcher, 1742 - 1813. He died in Grainger Co. TN Hope some of this helps you.
