There is nothing mentioned about the Underground railroad. As a young girl, my father belonged to the Historical Society in Indpls. I would work as a docent at house showings. We were trying to save a three story home with the only octagonal BLACK WALNUT staircase. It was all black walnut and so were the panels. It had a widows walk and in the basement a false wall that opened and could hold 50 slaves. It was used often. The house was torn down for a Shell filing station which failed within 1 year and was boarded up. Ah progress. Here is an article I found in the directory. "A negro was arrested here in December under the fugitive slave law. The arrest caused much excitement, and being favored by the crowd, he escaped, but was recaptured after a long chase in the North part of the city, and remanded to his master in Kentucky, being convoyed thither by a large squad of heavily armed deputy marshals." 1868 City Directory
Does anyone know what Rail Road was referred to as the P.P. & C. R.R.? My ancestor worked as a Checkman for the railroad in 1868 in Indianapolis, but I've not figured out yet what the P. P. and C. stand for. Any help appreciated. Joel www.rafert.org
