    3. Hi, I am glad that I was able to help out with the Ostermeyer family. Since the Piel surname was mentioned, I thought that it might be of interest to post the obit for a prominent member of that family. THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR, Friday, Aug 31, 1923; pg. 20 W.F. PIEL RITES TO BE HELD TOMORROW _____________ Starch Maker, Who Died After Long Illness, Was Pioneer Business Man. Funeral services for William F. Piel, 72 years old, president of the Piel Bros. Starch Company, who died at his home, 3138 North Meridian street, yesterday morning after a prolonged illness, will be held at the home and at the Church of Our Redeemer tomorrow afternoon. The Rev. William E. Elfert, pastor, will preach the funeral sermon. Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery. Mr. Piel was a well-known Indianapo- lis business man. He was the last sur- viving member of the original board of governors of the Indianapolis Board of Trade, which he helped to found. He was born in Indianapolis, Dec. 23, 1851, and, with the exception of a few years, he spent his entire life in this city. He was the son of William F. Piel Sr., one of the earliest business men of Indianapolis. He was educated in the Lutheran schools of this city and also attended Northwestern Christian university, the forerunner of Butler col- lege. Started as Bookkeeper. From the position of a bookkeeper in the Fletcher bank fifty-six years ago. Mr. Piel rose to a place as director of the Fletcher American National bank, the bank which succeeded the old Fletcher bank. He remained, however, as a bookkeeper at the old Fletcher bank only six months, before he joined his father and his brother, Charles F. Piel, in the starch making business. They succeeded in establishing three starch factories, two of which burned, but the third was organized with the National Starch Company in 1889. A year later Mr. Piel left Indianapo- lis for New York where he was vice president of the consolidated company, but he returned to Indianapolis in 1902 after resigning as president of the com- pany, to rejoin his father and brother in organizing the Piel Bros. Company. Helped to Found Board of Trade. Mr. Piel also took an active interest in commercial interests in Indianapolis. He, with Fred P. Rush of Indianapolis, a grain dealer, aided in organizing the Indianapolis Commercial Union, which later became the Board of Trade. He was the first vice president of the union, vice president of Products of Corn, and also vice president of the National Associa- tion of Wet Corn Millers. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Meyer of Indianapolis in 1874. Mrs. Piel died in 1911. Four of their eight chil- dren survive. They are Alfred, Elmer, William, and Mrs. Alex Metzger of Indi- anapolis. The sons were associated with their father in the starch company. One brother, Charles F. Piel, and two sis- ters, Mrs. Emelia Melcher and Mrs. Frank Sudbrock, all of Indianapolis, also survive him. Mr. Piel always was a staunch Lutheran church member. He also was a member of the Columbia Club. _________________________________ - Ed

    3. Hi Bonnie, Thanks for the information. I think I corresponded years ago with Jerry regarding the PIEL family. I have numerous lines that go back to the Minden area, with most settling in Indianapolis in the mid-1800s. 3. Ahh the intricate patterns woven by families, it is one of the most interesting (and at times frustrating) facets of genealogy. I want to thank Ed Sinker for sending me the newspaper information regarding the Indiana Paper Company. With the information sent to me from Ed and some research of my own I was able to determine the following family information: Frederick Ostermeyer Sr. (born about 1827 in Germany) had seven children as follows: 1. Eleanore Ostermeyer (b. c1854) married Charles T. Meyer on 26 Nov 1874 in Indianapolis 2. Mary Ostermeyer (b. 21 Dec 1855 and died 26 Apr 1894) married Henry W. Piel on 9 Dec 1877 in Indianapolis 3. Frederick Ostermeyer Jr. (b. Apr 1858 and died 14 Mar 1901) married Annie Raisner on 15 Jun 1879 in Indianapolis 4. Emelie Ostermeyer (b. Aug 1860) married Charles H. Buddenbaum on 25 Dec 1881 in Indianapolis 5. Elizabeth Lizette Ostermeyer (b. Mar 1863) married Charles W. Reger on 17 Jan 1886 in Indianapolis 6. Emma Ostermeyer (b. c1866) married Emanuel E. Seuel on 6 Jun 1900 in Indianapolis 7. Clara Ostermeyer (b. May 1870 and died 9 Nov 1887) Frederick Ostermeyer Jr. (1858-1901) and Annie Raisner had the following children: 1. Frederick John Ostermeyer (b. 21 Dec 1879) 2. Lotta Ostermeyer (b. Aug 1882) 3. Harry Charles Ostermeyer (b. 31 May 1884) 4. Elmer Henry Ostermeyer (b. 15 Jul 1886) 5. Alvin C. Ostermeyer (b. 5 Aug 1889) 6. Edna L. Ostermeyer (b. Jun 1895) This is not the Ostermeyer family I was actually looking for, however this family is also related to me as I share a common ancestor with Henry W. Piel, son-in-law of Frederick Ostermeyer Sr. I'm interested in talking to anyone regarding the Ostermeyer family for it is not only intermarried into a couple of my families in Indianapolis, but also appears to come from the same area of Germany, the towns just east of Minden. 3. Hi Nancy: I know this is a poor time to get involved in a thread like this right before Christmas but my mind is going in circles trying to figure out why we have two burial sites for Rebecca McClain Perkins. Are the stones still there at the Acton Cemetery that we could get a photo of them? Or do you live some distance away from that county? They appear to be the same Rebecca although there is a slight discrepancy in the dates. It may just be a coincidence that they both died on 13 Sept. I can't discount our Bible records. I am sure there are two ladies buried but I am questioning which one is really the daughter of John and Catharine. We do know the marriage record is our Rebecca although they had the name spelled McLain in the Bible. John and Rebecca had a son John William McClain Perkins b.21 Aug 1837. I received a copy of the Perkins family Bible records from the family who had the Bible. They had interpreted Katherine Driskell's name as Duskin from the old handwriting, but that is not how the marriage records have it. Rebecca McClain Perkins birth date was calculated from her age at time of death 69 y. 4m. 8 d. They seem to be the same person but it doesn't quite fly. The Bible records were augmented from a hired genealogist's research in the Kentucky area. I have a photo of Rebecca's stone and her little granddaughter's on the Washington Co., Iowa GenWeb site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~iawashin/cemrumb.htm Second row of photos John Perkins was a rather wealthy man for the times and owned quite a little land in Washington County. Iowa didn't become a State until 1838 so there weren't many settlers here until 1849-50. His second wife is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Both cemeteries are in Marion Twp. The thought runs in my mind that Don Marsh didn't know about the Iowa family and tried to match up another John Perkins with the ones in Indiana. I am sure they are related but not just how. We do know cousins frequently married in that era. Descendants of Joseph M. Perkins Generation No. 1 1. Joseph M.2 Perkins (John1) was born 13 Oct 1776, and died 23 Mar 1843 in Marion, IN, USA. The John Perkins in Indiana doesn't seem to match ours who we do have Bible Records on. Rebecca Perkins gravestone is in the Rumble Cemetery in Washington County back in a field. For some years the family thought it was an unmarked grave, but the broken stone was repaired and is back in place. I have a photo of the actual gravestone with the 13 September 1865 death date on it so I am sure of the date. It was also listed in the WPA records where I got the birth date. The dates you have may be correct but for a different Rebecca. I did find John Perkins and Rebecca McClains marriage record in Kentucky with her mother's name listed as Catherine McClain, widow. I am fuzzy on the Indiana history but we have pretty thoroughly researched Kentucky and Iowa. My grandmother had some info and a couple distant cousins had a bit more. Our only verification of her father was John McClain's estate settlement in 1804, which lists his wife as Catherine and children James and Rebecca. However, other McClains had Rebeccas as well.... The Rebecca McClain Perkins that I have was married in 1823 so I believe your Rebecca is a younger Rebecca. Is she the daughter of William McClain and Rebecca Hoagland. This is the only Hoagland info I have so you may be able to supplement it or clarify it. The following record was found USGENWEB Archives. 1812 Pension Claim. Is there someone in the Marion Co. area that can verify if there is an actual gravestone for Rebecca McClain Perkins in Acton Cemetery? I suspect it is just an assumption by someone that they are buried there if other family members lived there. The parents of Walter McCorkle are unknown but he named his only son was named Joseph Hillis McCorkle which implies that they may have been related to the Hillis family. 3. I know of at least two Rebecca McClains and perhaps more but I think they may have been confused. 3. Greetings, For the past few years we have been working an on extensive website with history of Primitive Baptist Churches, county by county, in over thirty states, mostly in the midwest, but including some information for states across the northern tier of America. For some of these states we have only sketchy information, but for others (such as Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa) we have a fair amount of detailed information. We have tried to locate and obtain church records, and have entered the names of members into a database, and have also put the surnames of the members on our website for each church, county by county. We began working on our database in 1986, and it presently has over 53,000 entries, and we are adding to it all the time as we find more church records. We have been trying to assist genealogists in locating ancestors ever since we organized our library in 1988. To view our website, go to the following URL: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html To go directly to the index of states included in our research (including Indiana), go to http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/Index.html We are posting this message on the county forums for those counties in Indiana in which the Danville Regular Baptist Association churches exist or have existed, and we would be grateful if anyone can help us locate any of the annual minutes of that association which we lack, or any of the records of the churches which composed the association. Some of the names of these churches include Abner's Creek (records located), Big White Lick Creek (records located), Eagle Creek, Union, Providence, Thorntown, Mt. Tabor, Clear Creek, Cynthiana, Antioch, Little Flock, and many more. We have very limited volunteer staff, but will do our best to respond as time permits.
