And to help list: City Market and all the old vendors. The cheeses and teas. Libby's and the ladies I bought fresh chickens and eggs from. The circle on Christmas Eve and how quiet it was. You could hear the snow falling. Walking thru Crown Hill and looking at trees and feeding squirrels that were bold as brass. Old real Lake Sullivan and sledding and skating on a big frozen pond. Hot chocolate at a big bon fire. The old fish hatchery at Lake Sullivan and the large amounts of green happy frogs. Having a big day downtown hitting Wassons, Blocks and Ayres. Sorry I like the tea room at Blocks the best. Chicken salad and that warm pecan roll. The men sitting on THEIR side having martinis in coffee cups and a bowl of Blocks famous bean soup. The models walking thru as you ate showing the stores wares. Driving down old Maple Lane which became 38th street in front of the cemetery. All the double rows of old "hard rock maples" that turned bright yellow in the fall. Driving at night thru the maples with the old street lights glowing. Some of my memories. Before the 70's and so much change and waste. DJ

I am seeking information about my great grandfather, John G. Koeppen, b. Sep 1855 in Germany, d. June 1911 in Indianapolis. His first wife was Susan A. Rogers, b. 1856 in Indiana, d. 1934 in Indianapolis. They divorced sometime between 1890 and 1900. He then married 10 May 1900 Johanna E. Weil Wulff, b. 1858 in Germany, d. poss. before 1910. They lived at 1202 and/or1204 Nordyke Ave. in Indianapolis. (One of those addresses was for a saloon that was originally owned by Conrad C. Wulff) Johanna E. Weil married Conrad C. Wulff on 23 Jan. 1886 in Indianapolis, he was b. abt. 1841 in Germany, and d. 1895 in Indianapolis. This was his second marriage, he had been married to Louisa Burkharst Harbrodt from 1879 until her death in 1881. This is a very complicated puzzle. If there is anyone who has information on any of the individuals mentioned above, possible descendants, or about the property on Nordyke Ave., I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you! Catherine
I am trying to contact descendants of James Jefferis B 15 December 1832 D 1922 in Indianapolis, IN. My records indicate he was survived by a son Joseph and daughter Elizabeth. If information is not available about James, data about his peers would be desirable: Thomas Shipley, Joseph Moore, Elizabeth Moore, and Sarah Matilda. Paul Dickinson Millersville, MD 21108

Hi Joel: Very interesting!! I found the following on the Indianapolis Underground Station at 414 West Vermont. This would have been within about a mile of where our ancestors lived. Look at maps.google.com or Google Earth: Bethel AME Church - Indianapolis' first African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church has played an important role in the city's African-American community for more than 160 years. It originated as a small congregation which held services in a log cabin, then known as the Underground Railroad's "Indianapolis Station." Church members actively promoted the abolitionist movement, often harboring fugitive slaves en route to Canada. These activities were not always well received by some members of the community and it is believed that slavery supporters caused the fire that destroyed the first church building in 1862. Over the next five years, a determined congregation raised the money needed to rebuild the church in 1867. Today, the church continues to stand on downtown Indianapolis' West Vermont Street. Bethel AME Church, known as the "mother church" of the African Methodist faith in Indiana, played an important role in the community after the Civil War. It opened schools for African-Americans throughout the city and established the Indianapolis chapter of the NAACP and the Indiana State Federation of Colored Woman's Clubs. Visitors are welcome to attend services and tour the building. Call 317-634-7002 for more information. My grandmother who lived from 1900-1996 told me that there was a secret room under their house on Merrill Street and that she was told it had been used as part of the Underground Railroad. I'm not sure when the house was built, I only know that her family was living there by 1870 (and possibly as early as the 1850s). Unfortunately the house no longer stands as it was purchased by Eli Lilly in the 1950s and was demolished. There is nothing mentioned about the Underground railroad. As a young girl, my father belonged to the Historical Society in Indpls. I would work as a docent at house showings. We were trying to save a three story home with the only octagonal BLACK WALNUT staircase. It was all black walnut and so were the panels. It had a widows walk and in the basement a false wall that opened and could hold 50 slaves. It was used often. The house was torn down for a Shell filing station which failed within 1 year and was boarded up. Ah progress. Here is an article I found in the directory. "A negro was arrested here in December under the fugitive slave law. The arrest caused much excitement, and being favored by the crowd, he escaped, but was recaptured after a long chase in the North part of the city, and remanded to his master in Kentucky, being convoyed thither by a large squad of heavily armed deputy marshals." 1868 City Directory

Nancy, Thanks much for the lookup; it was very kind of you to look them up. Leroy Jr is Leroy's son. I don't know who Mary is, but Myra married Bob Morgan. Mark: They could have gone to most any county. My grandparents went to Morgan County and my parents went to Madison County. All lived in Marion County. Jan in FL.
Mark, my parents lived in Indianapolis and went to Shelby County to get married in 1946. Maybe it was a smaller place and easier to get around in. I asked my father why they went to Shelby County and he said they were just out for a drive and looking for something to do. If my father is a typical Hoosier all I can say is that Indiana must be the "Tall Tales" capitol of the world. He keeps us laughing. Joyce Shannon Zandri

Thank you, the information on the location of Meek St. will help me. Joy
If I may help Meek, east and west from Noble to corporation east, two blocks south of Washington :)
Thank you DJ for the information on the Williams. I think that William G. Williams is my ancestor. I'll get a map to see if I can find that street. Joy
