    3. I apologize if this is slightly off-topic, but I'm not sure where else to turn. I have a trunk that has been handed down in my family. Family story says that it was one of the trunks the family used when they immigrated to Indianapolis from Germany. I'm not sure how to date the trunk to see if the story is possible. The trunk is made of wood covered in metal; it has a slightly rounded top, leather handles on each side and is approximately 75 centimeters (30 inches) wide by 40 centimeters (16 inches) deep by 50 centimeters (20 inches) tall. Is anyone out there familiar with a news group, mailing list, etc where I might find more information? Thank you! Joel www.rafert.org

    3. With an estimate of 100,000 cemeteries in Indiana, getting them registered is a daunting task. Jeannie Regan-Dinius, Special Projects Coordinator for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, is charged with just that task under the Indiana General Cemetery Act. Based in Indianapolis, she is gathering information on any property in the state on which human remains are buried. This includes cemeteries of any size regardless of ownership of the property. She visited the Duneland Historical Society on Thursday, May 15 and told of her work and how the public can help. State law governs cemeteries and with the Cemetery Registry under the IDNR, policing is done by conservation officers. Regan-Dinius encourages the public to alert her office in case of disturbance, vandalism or looting in cemeteries. In a recent case a woman called to report that her neighbor had removed gravestones for a construction project. Vandalism is a major problem with Indiana Cemeteries and a variety of state laws now protect cemeteries. She said cemeteries in Indiana contain many art works and are helpful sources of information for genealogists. Planned construction within 100 feet of cemetery property must be reported and approved in advance. In order to visit a cemetery which is reached through private property, permission must be granted by the property owner. When questioned about unused plots, she said unless it is specified in the deed the plot cannot be re-sold without the permission of the owner or his or her heirs. In the case of the Chesterton Cemetery, the deeds say that a plot can be re-sold after 100 years if not used. She was asked about rubbings of grave markers. She said this is not illegal but rubbings do damage the stones. Regan-Dinius says many cemeteries in Porter County are listed but she welcomes information from citizens. The Duneland Historical Society invites anyone knowing of a small cemetery in Porter county to call with the name and location and the DHS will work with Regan-Dinius to be sure it is listed. Call Betty Canright, 926-3231. Posted 5/19/2003

    2. If you havent tried this. I look at the census's and see if they live near your relative. Most families stayed real close even within streets of each other. In not next door like my family. Also I found cousins this way. If you havent thought of this-good luck. dj

    3. There was an old railroad they called the Nickle Plate nicknamed Big 4 line when I was small in maybe the 1930's. It ran from Indianapolis toward Ohio through Connersville, and Liberty.I think it went to Cincinnati. I rode it to Indy quite a few times to see my relatives. 3. Nan, Jan, and others, Although I've not seen the directory myself, this information (P. P. & C. R. R.) was sent to me by someone who had the 1868 City Directory, which I believe is typed, at least the 1876 version that I have is typed. The ancestor in question died in 1875 so he is in the 1868 City Directory and the 1870 Census, but not in the 1876 City Directory. The 1870 Census simply lists him as RR Clerk. In searching the web I did find one reference to a Steam Engine on display in Jim Thorpe, PA that is listed as PP&C. I've been unable to find anything more about it yet. Thanks! 3. Hi Joel: You might want to recheck the census. Sometimes the letters are very hard to distinguish. I would have checked it but I didn't know what name you were researching. The following link is a good example of old handwriting: http://www.iltrails.org/handwritingA-T.html I found an old book by W. R. Holloway entitled Indianapolis, a Historical and Statistical Sketch of the Railroad City, 1870, page 128 In 1865, city aid was voted upon petition of many citizens to the amount of about $200,000 to four lines of railroad: The Vincennes $60,000 Indiana and Illinois Central $45,000 Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Western $45,000 Indianapolis and Cincinnati Junction $45,000 These roads have all been completed and are in full operation except the I & I Central or II&C. Capital I's and P's could look very similar especially if the census taker wasn't too careful about the way he was writing; which I think most of them weren't. So I think a good candidate for your railroad is the Indiana and Illinois Central Railroad. This is one of the most fascinating books on the history of Indianapolis. I hope this is of some help to you. Considering there were four railroads in Indianapolis in that era, I would say this is the most likely candidate. Just as a bit of fascinating trivia, it was on May 30, 1869, that the tradition of decorating graves with flowers started - instituted by the women of the South and recommended by the GAR. 2. I Googled the initials and came up with this. Do you think it could have been I.P.& C. instead of P.P.&C.? This is talking about Miami County and the Indianapolis, Peru and Chicago line. Miami County is well supplied with railways, being traversed from east to west by the Detroit, Eel River &Illinois, the Toledo, Wabash &Western, and the Chicago division of the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati &St. Louis Railway. The Indianapolis, Peru &Chicago runs through the county from north to south. This line was begun from Peru to Indianapolis, through surveys, in 1847, and completed to Peru August 17, 1854, being the first railway in the county. The next was the T.,W.&W., completed in 1856. When I googled PP&C railroad, it gave me this link http://www.aecma.org/Publications/glossary/gp.htm, which was a list of abbreviations (PP&C meant Production, Planning & Control)--so maybe it is not the name of a railroad. 3. DJ, you really brought back some wonderful memories of our old hometown. One of my fondest memories was Thanksgiving day. We could hardly wait until dinner was over, with all the great foods. Dad would take us downtown where we would wait with anticipation in front of the old Ayres windows for them to unveil the most magical animated Christmas scenes in the world, that unveiling was the beginning of the Christmas season for us. When Dad had his cerebral hemorrhage when I was small, my older brothers and sisters continued the tradition. We loved to ice skate at Lake Sullivan and could hardly wait each year until the ice was thick enough. Thanks for bringing back all the fond memories. The cheeses and teas. Libby's and the ladies I bought fresh chickens and eggs from. The circle on Christmas Eve and how quiet it was. You could hear the snow falling. Walking thru Crown Hill and looking at trees and feeding squirrels that were bold as brass. Old real Lake Sullivan and sledding and skating on a big frozen pond. Hot chocolate at a big bon fire. The old fish hatchery at Lake Sullivan and the large amounts of green happy frogs. Having a big day downtown hitting Wassons, Blocks and Ayres. Sorry I like the tea room at Blocks the best. Chicken salad and that warm pecan roll. The men sitting on THEIR side having martinis in coffee cups and a bowl of Blocks famous bean soup. The models walking thru as you ate showing the stores wares. Driving down old Maple Lane which became 38th street in front of the cemetery. All the double rows of old "hard rock maples" that turned bright yellow in the fall. Driving at night thru the maples with the old street lights glowing. Some of my memories. Before the 70's and so much change and waste. DJ ==== INMARION Mailing List ==== Post a <a href="http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/In/Marion">Query of your Marion County, Indiana Ancestor</a>
