Doris: I don't think that you are off track at all. The McPeeters (McPheeters) connection is certainly interesting. Shadrach Inman of the Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego trio married a Mary Ann McPheeters. The Inman brothers were in Rowan County. Then Burke County, NC was created from Rowan. I'm off on another tangent today (Memorial Day). Yesterday, for the first time, I was finally able to access the LDS web site. I found a record for the Joseph Spencer of Lee County I was working on the other day. This one claimed that his father was William David Spencer (but went back no further than that). It also suggested that William David was believed to have been born in NC. His son Joseph, however, was born in Wales???!!!! I suppose it is possible that the family relocated to Europe for a while and then returned to the colonies??? If this is true, they could have returned via Philadelphia and worked their way south from there. (This gets more complicated everytime I investigate it).
