I'm just wondering about the old tree. When I was there in 1960 with a high school class, our guide pointed out a tree to us and told us that it was standing there when the first supply arrived. When we were there in 1994, I asked about the old tree, and no one knew anything about it. In fact, one of the park service employees said, "Oh, we have lots of old trees around here." Fortunately, I took a picture of that tree in 1960 and I put it in the VA Spencer portion of my Twigs journal.
