There is an old myth floating around in my family that Elizabeth Inman Spence (daughter of Samuel Inman and wife of Samuel Spence) was of German extraction. Since "Inman" is an English name and not German, I discarded the theory. I speculate in my online journal at rootsweb that Meshach Inman's wife was possibly German--and I still think that is a great possibility. But now I discovered something else and I plan to pursue it next week (when I go to the library). Samuel and Elizabeth Spence's youngest daughter was Sarah Elizabeth. Her husband (first husband), was John Hull. I had thought the "Hull" name was really "Hall", but it wasn't. The name was originally "Hohl" and it was German. I found John's family. His parents were Daniel E. Hull, Jr. and Mary Anna Elizabeth Beard, and they were married in AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA in 1832. (Same stomping ground for the Spencers, Bunches, etc.) John was born in 1842. His family moved from VA to Wright County Missouri. I don't know whether he met Sarah Spence in Missouri or after they all fled to Grayson County, TX after the Civil War. I do have a feeling or a hunch that this Hull line may have intermarried with the Inman line somewhere in VA, or wherever else they may have lived. Anyway, the researcher who sent me the Inman-German theory is mainly concerned with the Newton Jasper Spence family--Newton Jasper was Sarah's brother who served time in Ft. Delaware Prison during the Civil War. This researcher is more familiar with the Spences who took the Southern Side in the Civil War--and that Hull connection fits in with that side. Since "Hull" is German and if the Hulls intermarried with the Inmans--the Inman-German theory may have originated in that connection. This researcher knew nothing about Meshach or his two brothers. Anyway, I am on another hunt. If anyone knows anything about Inman/Hull or Hohl marriages, I am definitely interested.
