I've been busy in my flower beds the past two weeks (besides mourning the death of my computer mouse) and am planting what I call a "Family Garden." After digging up large spaces around my patio, I was suddenly confronted with the problem of what to plant. It didn't take long to decide. My Grandfather Spence raised peonie bushes. I remember seeing them when I was small and have a picture of me standing in front of them, holding a doll. One whole bed will house the Spence peonie bushes--so that will be called the Spence Garden. My Grandmother Inman's middle name sparked my next inclusion: Adelia Viola Clay Inman. I have violas in the front yard. They seem to be doing quite well. Also, I added a large number of rose bushes this year: that seems to be an Inman sort of thing. My Grandmother Spence (whose maiden name was Hopper) raised zineas and lilies of the valley. So I'm going to have a Hopper zinea bed. (I haven't decided what to do with the lilies of the valley, however--I've never had great success with those!) Anyway, to make a long story short, I'm digging for ancestral flowers and shrubs. If anyone has a favorite or knows of an ancestor who had a favorite, be sure to let me know. I have a lot of space to fill!
